MLB Baseball Yankees vs Athletics

The New York Yankees and Oakland Athletics may have started this MLB Baseball season with vastly different projections, but here they are, both in line to grab wild card berths in the American League. If the standings hold, these two teams would be in line to face off in a winner-take-all playoff game with a chance

to move on to the American League Divisional Series. The Athletics need to get there first, but they are in great shape as they continue to surge while the Mariners fall off the pace. The Athletics and Yankees will face off this week in a matchup that is expected to preview the A.L. wild card game.

Odds Analysis

The Athletics have used a dominant second half of the season to elevate into the second wild card spot and are now a handful of games ahead of the Mariners. Oakland doesn’t have nearly the payroll or the big names of the other teams expected to make the playoffs in the American League, but it is more than 25 games over .500 and not a pushover.

The Yankees are even better behind a dominant offense. New York isn’t going to catch the Red Sox in the American League East and thus has a tougher road to the World Series, but the talent is there to make a serious run. The Yankees’ big bats could make them the favorite in this game in MLB baseball gambling.

Probable Pitchers

The Yankees are projected to send veteran left-hander C.C. Sabathia to the mound. He no longer has dominant stuff but has turned into a crafty starter who knows how to get batters out. Sabathia is 7-5 on the season with a 3.36 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP. He hasn’t allowed more than three runs in a game since mid-July and has been a pleasant surprise all year. Sabathia looked like his career was winding down a couple seasons ago but he has reinvented himself.

The Athletics will counter with fellow veteran Trevor Cahill. He is 5-3 on the year with a 3.60 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP. Cahill has given up a combined eight earned runs in his past two outings and needs to right the ship. He has bounced between relief and starting in the past couple of years but has done a nice job for the A’s as a starter this year.

Injury Update

The Yankees are still missing slugger Aaron Judge, who has some of the most raw power in the major leagues. They still have Giancarlo Stanton anchoring the lineup but Judge’s absence is big. Shortstop Didi Gregorius and catcher Gary Sanchez are also out currently so New York’s potent lineup is missing some key players.

Even so, there is plenty of talent still available and Cahill will have to work hard to keep the Yankees’ offense at bay.

The Athletics don’t get the same respect as a team like the Yankees but they have a solid group. The matchup against Sabathia works out well in this one as Oakland has a lot of talented right-handed hitters. Even though New York is the better team, look for Cahill to pitch well while Sabathia has some trouble.

The A’s are the pick to take care of business at home in MLB gambling.

MLB ATS Pick: Oakland Athletics 5, New York Yankees 4
