The second leg of the Triple Crown, the Preakness Stakes is set for Saturday at Pimlico Racecourse in Baltimore, Maryland. Kentucky Derby winner Justify is the odds-on favorite to keep his Triple Crown hopes alive against a small field of challengers. It is hard to see anything other than a win for Justify on Saturday. The horse came out of the Derby really well and any concerns about a bruise on his left leg seem to be past. Trainer Bob Baffert said Justify looks just as good as he did before the Derby and against this field that means he should win going away.
You can almost put everyone else in the field in this category, but we’ll put a few horses into this category and a few into the no chance category. Good Magic finished second to Justify in the Derby but he still couldn’t get past him. Good Magic is trained by Chad Brown who won the Preakness last year with Cloud Computing. The problem with backing Good Magic is that he wasn’t good enough in the Derby to beat Justify and nothing has really changed.
If there is one horse that could upset the apple cart and beat Justify it could be Quip. His connections chose not to run him in the Derby because he didn’t look that great coming out of the Arkansas Derby. Quip will be fresh and is not without a chance in the Preakness. The problem with backing Quip or any of the new shooters is that most Preakness winners are horses that ran in the Derby.
Diamond King is another of the new horses to challenge Justify. Diamond King has won four of his six races but none of those races were against top competition. The horse does get Javier Castellano in the irons, but it seems unlikely Diamond King is good enough to beat Justify. Sporting Chance didn’t run in the Derby, as he was sent in the Pat Day Mile. Sporting Chance is a temperamental horse that doesn’t always like to run. He has the talent to contend with Justify if he really wants to run, but more often than not he doesn’t.
Bravazo was sixth in the Derby and closed well but the Preakness is a shorter race and it is hard to make much of a case for Bravazo. Tenfold has two wins in three career starts, but three starts at this point in a career is not much. He was outclassed in the Arkansas Derby and he is outclassed here. Lone Sailor has nine career starts and just one win. He did nothing to inspire any confidence in the Derby.
Preakness Stakes Picks
It would be nice to find a good longshot to take in the Preakness at big odds, but realistically, all of the horses are running for second place. Justify is the class of this field and he should win going away. If you are looking for a longshot then Sporting Chance is worth considering, as he has the talent to give Justify some competition if he decides he wants to put in a top effort.
