Last fall the New York Yankees went back to the future. At least as far as style of management. The late great Boss George Steinbrenner would have been proud. Despite consistent success and a berth in the American League Divisional Series manager Joe Girardi was fired. From 2006 through 2017 he made the Yankees the example of stability.
In 2009 Girardi led the Bronx Bombers to the World Series championship which was in just his second year guiding the team. It proved to be the high-water mark for the Girardi era. Yankee brass believed that the team had gone stale. ;Perhaps they were right. Aaron Boone is now the man on the hot seat as Yankee skipper. And after a hot start things have begun to level off.

Trailing the Red Sox
Both the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees changed managers after playoff failures in 2017. Yet the results have not changed much. As was the case last year the Red Sox lead the American League East. With the Yankees right behind in second place as they were last year.
Look of a Complete Team
The Yankees rank second in the American League for both run production and staff earned run average. Their lineup ranks second for OPS and first for home runs. The pitching staff boasts the top ERA for bullpen in all of Major League Baseball.
Tribe Tops Terrible Central
Cleveland leads the American League Central which ranks as the worst division in the game. As it is the Indians also impress with rankings of third for run production and third for home runs. Their starting staff ranks second best for quality starts. The sore spot is a bullpen that ranks dead last in MLB for earned run average.
Cleveland manager Terry Francona has been the catalyst for the franchise’s resurgence. Francona was the long time winning manager of the Boston Red Sox that purged that franchise of its losing culture and perceived curses. At Cleveland he may have done an even a better job as he took over a team that was down and out. Just two years ago the Tribe won the American League pennant. They are again a top contender.
Left hander CC Sabathia will get the start for the Yankees while right hander Mike Clevinger will take the hill for the Tribe. Sabathia is 6-4 with a 3.34 ERA and has posted 75 strikeouts in 94 innings with a WHIP of 1.28. Clevinger is 7-4 with a 3.34 ERA and has posted 110 strikeouts in 116 innings of work with a WHIP of 1.23.
Top Players to Watch
Right fielder Aaron Judge has the hot hand for the Bronx Bombers. Judge leads New York with 25 home runs, 18 doubles, 65 runs, 60 runs batted in and an OPS of .957. Designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton has a powerful bat as well. Stanton has clobbered 18 doubles and 22 home runs while posting 56 runs and 54 runs batted in with an OPS of .866.
For Cleveland third baseman Jose Ramirez has been the top weapon with 26 doubles, 27 home runs, 63 runs, 65 runs batted in and an OPS of 1.001. Shortstop Francisco Lindor has also been strong with 28 doubles, 25 home runs, 82 runs, 62 runs batted in and an OPS of .941.
Yankees vs. Indians Free Picks
The big difference here is the two bullpens. The Yankees have a huge advantage here. If Cleveland doesn’t straighten out their bullpen soon they can forget dreams of a World Series.
