The Guelph Nighthawks head into the 2020 CEBL season looking to improve upon last season’s 6-14 record. The Nighthawks brought back all of their top players including Olu Famutimi who averaged 15 points per game last season. Guelph looks to be better prepared for their second season and continuity is a big reason why.

They should be improved this season and there is no question that the team expects to be a playoff contender in 2020. Let’s look at the Nighthawks heading into this CEBL Canadian Basketball season and the 2020 Guelph Nighthawks schedule.

2020 Guelph Nighthawks

The Nighthawks made a good start for this season by bringing back Famutimi. He averaged 15 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists in 19 games for Guelph last season. He was named the team’s MVP for last season. “Olu became a staple in our locker room last season, showing our younger players the work ethic and dedication required to excel at the professional level.” said head coach and general manager Charles Kissi, “His steady presence was influential as we started to mold the culture of our club in the second half of the season. We’re excited to have Olu back, and I believe being the first signing of the upcoming season is representative of his role as a core leader in 2020,”

Guelph also brought back Jamal Reynolds and Kimbal Mackenzie for this season. Both players have been playing in Spain, as Mackenzie was with C.B. Valladolid in the LEB Gold League and Reynolds with Circulo Gijon in the LEB Silver League. Mackenzie averaged 21 points per game and 4.3 assists per game for Guelph last season. Reynolds played the first half of the season a year ago for the Nighthawks and averaged 5.2 rebounds per game. He averaged 14.4 points per game and 5.8 rebounds per game for Circulo Gijon.

Guelph re-signed Michale Kyser for this season. He has been playing for the NBA G-League’s Lakeland Magic. He averaged 9 points and 5.8 rebounds per game with Lakeland. He played the last six games of last season for Guelph and averaged 8.6 points, 6.2 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game.

Guelph also re-signed Tyrell Corbin who averaged 11.3 points and 2.5 assists per game last season.

Kissi said that returning the core was critical for this season. “Our primary focus as free agency opened was seeing the return of the key components of our 2019 roster. Now we pivot to a focus on new talent that can support these guys and continue to build on the positive chemistry that we concluded with last season,” said Kissi.

The Nighthawks signed Four-time U SPORTS Men’s Basketball National Champion Marcus Anderson in the first round of the Draft and they took guard Ali Sow from Wilfrid Laurier University in the second round. They rounded things out by taking forward Mitch Saunders in the third round.

“I’m excited to bring Marcus, Ali and Mitch into the Nighthawks program. They each offer a unique skillset that will add value to our club in pursuit of the 2020 CEBL Championship.” Kissi said.
