CEBL Basketball Ottawa BlackJacks

The 2020 CEBL season will include a new team, as the Ottawa BlackJacks begin play. The BlackJacks are the first expansion team for the CEBL, as the league goes from six teams to seven teams. The BlackJacks could do better than most expansion teams, as there is not much separating the talent level between the seven teams in the CEBL.

Let’s look at the BlackJacks heading into this season and the 2020 Ottawa BlackJacks schedule.

2020 Ottawa BlackJacks

The Blackjacks will be coached by Osvaldo Jeanty this CEBL Canadian Basketball season. He doesn’t have a ton of experience, but he has a good relationship with general manager Dave Smart. The Blackjacks are counting heavily on local players and Smart picked Jeanty as the head coach because of how well he knows the area. “For me, finding someone who has a similar relationship and connection with the players in our organization was very important to me,” Smart said to the media, “Osvaldo’s really close to all the guys who have played in the Eastern Ontario area and the Montreal area, and it really helps in terms of that.” The BlackJacks have signed a number of players in preparation for the 2020 season and we want to take a look at the players they brought in.

The BlackJacks signed free agents Mutis Tutu and Yasiin Joseph. Tutu averaged 7.2 points, 3 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 19.8 minutes per game for Carleton University and Loyola Marymount University. Joseph averaged 11.6 points, 3.2 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 20.1 minutes in 77 games in the OUA. “Yasiin and Munis come from a winning culture. They understand what it takes to win basketball games. Their strengths complement each other perfectly.” Jeanty said, “They both have great skill sets, but what sets them apart is their unique abilities. Yasiin is an elite scorer while Munis is an elite defender. They know each other very well and it adds to the chemistry we are trying to build. I’m looking forward to helping them grow and prepare for the next chapter of their careers.”

The BlackJacks also signed free agent forward Eric Kibi who has averaged 7.6 points, 5.7 rebounds, 0.6 assists per game. He averaged 8.3 points, 6.2 rebounds, 0.5 assists, 0.4 steals and 20.1 minutes in 32 games in Argentina.

Another player Ottawa signed was free agent forward Jean Emmanuel Pierre-Charles. He has averaged 5.8 points, 6.6 rebounds, 1.0 assists and 23.2 minutes in 70 games as a pro. He played last season with Santos de San Luis Potosi of the Liga Nacional de Baloncesto Profesional (LNBP) in Mexico. Pierre-Charles was the first-ever signing for the BlackJacks. “Signing a first player is a big step for a new franchise. We are doing it the right way with Jean Emmanuel, a local athlete who grew up in Ottawa and represented Canada at the Commonwealth Games and World University Games.” Dave Smart said, “With his experience playing professionally in Spain and Mexico, Jean showed us what he can bring to the table and it fits well in the system we want to build this year with the BlackJacks.”

The BlackJacks also signed three players in the CEBL Draft. They took three Carleton Ravens players in TJ Lall, who was chosen first overall, Lloyd Pandi (14th overall) and Alain Louis (15th overall).
