FREE SEC Tournament Picks and Odds to Win

It’s a near lock that the Kentucky Wildcats make it to the SEC Tournament championship game. And it’s another good bet that they win it. The Wildcats have played for a chance to cut down the nets in eight of the last nine seasons, winning it in the last four and 31 times overall. That’s five more tournament titles than the other 13 conference teams combined. The SEC is as strong as it’s ever been, though, making the Cats’ path to another title a little more difficult.

LSU won the regular season title by going 16-2 with wins over Kentucky, Tennessee and Auburn in the only games played between those teams. Yet the Tigers are the fourth favorite to win the tournament title. Off court distractions have put head coach Will Wade on the shelf and we don’t know if Ja’vonte Smart is going to play. That certainly put a thorn in the Tigers’ paw.

Tennessee held down the No. 1 ranking in the country for a good chunk of the season, only to falter down the stretch. A thrashing of Kentucky was payback for an earlier loss to the Wildcats, but the Vols couldn’t sustain momentum and blew a chance at a share of the regular season crown with a loss to Auburn in the last game.

Kentucky has made the SEC Tournament their own playground and Coach Cal knows nothing other than playing for a title, even with the turnover in personnel. The Cats simply reload and they have another group that’s ready to make a case for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. They can do that by securing a fifth straight SEC Tournament title.

Given the talent at the top of the SEC, it’s doubtful we see a lower seed make a run to the title. Mississippi State, Auburn and Mississippi are all solid teams and will probably get invited to the Dance. Florida and South Carolina both improved their play once the league season began and were much better at the end of the season than at the beginning. Still, it would be a surprise if a team other than Kentucky, Tennessee or LSU won the title.

No team in the country will be dealing with the crap that’s going on in Baton Rouge. Wade was suspended and Smart sidelined as part of the FBI’s investigation into college basketball. The actions of the administration didn’t affect the team over the weekend when the Tigers clinched the regular season title with a whoopin of Vanderbilt. Of course it was Vandy, a team that failed to win a SEC game this season.

This could also be a galvanizing moment for LSU; a situation that brings the team closer together in the quest for a common goal. The absence of Smart definitely hurts, but the Tigers have three players in Tremont Waters, Skylar Mays and Naz Reid, who are among the best in the conference.

Player to Watch

Keep an eye on Kentucky’s P.J. Washington, who is one of the best in the country. A big man with a polished game, he’s a rarity at UK because he actually stuck around for his sophomore season. Washington can play inside with the best, but he also has the footwork and soft touch to be deadly from the outside.

He’s a matchup nightmare for opponents and he takes what he’s given. Coach Cal calls him the ultimate teammate. Washington leads the Wildcats with 14.9 points and 7.5 rebounds per game while shooting 52.1 percent from the field and 42.3 percent from deep. On a roster full of talented players, Washington might be the best.

There’s a good chance we see Tennessee and Kentucky in a semifinal game and that’s the tournament winner. The Vols slipped to the No. 3 seed by losing to Auburn over the weekend, but they are a veteran group that’s been here before, just last year as a matter of fact. I don’t believe LSU will be able to overcome the distractions and Auburn will be a tough out. But this game decides the winner and I like Tennessee to come out on top.
