This is a make or break season for Archie Miller. Miller was hired to return the Indiana Hoosiers to glory, but instead the once-proud program continues to be mired in mediocrity. Indiana went 35-31 during his first two seasons, so he knows he must take the Hoosiers back to the NCAA Tournament this season. The Hoosiers currently stand a good chance of hearing their name called on Selection Sunday with a 14-4 record, but a win over the 15-4 Maryland Terrapins would certainly bolster their chances. Indiana is expected to be a small favorite at home per the college basketball betting odds on Sunday afternoon.

Maryland and Indiana both already have three losses in conference play, so neither team can afford another defeat at this point if they are to contend for the Big Ten title. The Terrapins enter this game ranked No. 17 in the nation, but they are looking to find their footing after going 5-4 in their last nine games. Over that stretch, Maryland has really struggled on the road, losing four of their last five road games. They halted their losing streak away from home on Tuesday night with a 77-66 victory over Northwestern, but the Wildcats are in last place in the Big Ten.
Indiana has some nice wins to its credit this season. The Hoosiers knocked off No. 5 Florida State in non-conference play, and they beat Ohio State in Bloomington two weeks ago. Their only home loss was to Arkansas at the end of December, and five more wins would likely get them into the Big Dance since that would guarantee at least a .500 record in Big Ten play.
The Terrapins crushed the Hoosiers in College Park earlier this month by a final score of 75-59. Four of Maryland’s starters ended up scoring at least 10 points, and Jalen Smith led all scorers with 19 points despite playing just 17 minutes. Turnovers were a big part of the previous meeting between these two teams with Indiana turning the ball over twice as often, and Maryland was much better from the charity stripe.
Smith was the star the last time these teams met, and he is the most efficient player on Maryland. He is hitting 52.5 percent of his field goals and 39.5 percent of his three-pointers, and he is also pulling down 9.5 rebounds per game. He is a threat to secure a double-double any night, and he is the key to this offense as he is the only player averaging more than 10 minutes a game to shoot better than 43 percent from the floor.
Indiana boasts a sensational young player in freshman Trayce Jackson-Davis. Jackson-Davis is averaging 14.2 PPG and 8.2 RPG, and he has been a terror from the field. He is hitting 63.4 percent of his field goals, making it difficult to stop him when he’s near the basket. Jackson-Davis is an old school big man that doesn’t shoot threes, and that’s unfortunate since Indiana is one of the worst teams from downtown in the nation. The Hoosiers are sinking under 30 percent of their three-point chances.
Maryland has one of the best defenses in the country. The Terrapins are rated fifth in adjusted defense in Ken Pomeroy’s ratings, and they are excellent at shutting down interior scorers. Opponents are converting on just 42.3 percent of their two-point attempts against the Terps, so Jackson-Davis is going to run into some trouble scoring. With that in mind, take Maryland to pull out the victory on the road.
Terrapins at Hoosiers Score Prediction: Maryland 77, Indiana 70
