The Seton Hall Pirates get a chance at the spotlight on Thursday night, as they host the Michigan State Spartans on FS1. The Pirates began the season ranked in the Top 15 in the country, while the Spartans began the season ranked No. 1. The Pirates have not had any real competition as they have easily defeated Wagner and Stony Brook, while the Spartans have already played and lost to Kentucky. Let’s look at Michigan State vs. Seton Hall and college basketball picks.

The Spartans bounced back from their loss to Kentucky by rolling over Binghamton last time out, winning 100-47. The Spartans are a very good team and a loss to Kentucky early in the season is not anything to get worried about. Michigan State is likely to be listed as a road favorite in this contest, especially since Seton Hall is going to be without Preseason First Team All-American Myles Powell who suffered an ankle injury in the win over Stony Brook. Seton Hall head coach Kevin Willard said that Powell is likely to miss this game.
"It doesn't look like a 1-game, 2-game [injury]," Kevin Willard said to the media, "This might be a prolonged absence."
Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo said that Seton Hall is going to be a big test for his team, but his comments came before the Pirates lost Powell to injury.
“I said at the beginning of the year, I thought Seton Hall might be the best team of the four, including us, just because they got eight out of nine [leading scorers] back,” Izzo said to the media, “They got a superstar guard [Myles Powell]. He’s a very good coach [Kevin Willard] and it’s a very tough place to play. So I haven’t changed any on Seton Hall.” The four teams Izzo compared Seton Hall with were his Michigan State team, Duke, Kentucky and Kansas.
The Spartans now have the clear edge in the backcourt with Cassius Winston who had 21 points in the loss to Kentucky. The Pirates will have a very difficult time containing Winston and without Powell they will have a hard time keeping up in terms of scoring.
It is very early in the NCAA Football season, but Michigan State is averaging 81 points per game while giving up 58 per contest. The Pirates are averaging just over 89 points per game and giving up 64 per contest. These teams have not met since 2001 when it was Michigan State winning 68-64.
If the Pirates had Powell then this would be a spot for Seton Hall to make a statement and get a huge win. I don’t think they can beat a very good Michigan State team without him in the lineup. The only concern I have with backing the Spartans is that Seton Hall may play really hard in their first game without Powell and give a strong effort. I still don’t think it will be enough, as the Pirates simply can’t replace Powell and this is not the NBA where another great player is waiting to step in and replace an injured player. I will lay the points and take Michigan State to win and cover.
Spartans vs. Pirates Score Prediction: Michigan State 73, Seton Hall 64
