No. 3 Michigan vs. No. 7 Texas A&M, 7:37 p.m., TBS

Friday, March 23 (All Times Eastern)

No. 1 Kansas vs. No. 5 Clemson, 7:07 p.m., CBS

No. 1 Villanova vs. No. 5 West Virginia, 7:27 p.m., TBS

No. 2 Duke vs. No. 11 Syracuse, 9:37 p.m., CBS

No. 2 Purdue vs. No. 3 Texas Tech, 9:57 p.m., TBS

The 2018 Sweet Sixteen definitely looks different than any other Sweet Sixteen in history because for the first time in history, one of the regions will not have any of the top four seeds. No. 1 Virginia became the first team in history to lose to a No. 16 seed, as they were beaten by UMBC in the South region. None of the top four seeds in the South region remain.

The South region now features the Kentucky Wildcats, a No. 5 seed that is now favored to get to the Final Four. The South features a No. 11 seed in Loyola-Chicago who has a 98-year old fan in Sister Jean who serves as the team’s chaplain. Loyola will take on Nevada in the Sweet Sixteen, while Kentucky plays Kansas State. The West Region has Florida State taking on Gonzaga, while Michigan battles Texas A&M.

The other half of the Sweet Sixteen bracket is almost the exact opposite, as both No. 1 seeds and both No. 2 seeds are still alive. Villanova is the top seed in the East and they will play West Virginia in the Sweet Sixteen, while Purdue takes on Texas Tech. The Midwest Region features No. 1 Kansas and No. 2 Duke. The Jayhawks get Clemson in the Sweet Sixteen, while Duke plays Syracuse.

Sweet Sixteen Odds

Kentucky -6 vs. Kansas State

Nevada -2 vs. Loyola-Chicago

Michigan -3 vs. Texas A&M

Gonzaga -6 vs. Florida State

Villanova -5.5 vs. West Virginia

Purdue -1 vs. Texas Tech

Duke -11.5 vs. Syracuse

Kansas -4.5 vs. Clemson

Sweet Sixteen Predictions

Let’s take a look at one game for Thursday in the Sweet Sixteen and one for Friday. The Thursday matchup of interest has No. 5 Kentucky taking on No. 9 Kansas State on CBS, with Kentucky listed as a 6-point favorite. Kentucky is now the class of the South region and they are favored to get past Kansas State. Kansas State got past Creighton and then beat UMBC to make it this far, while Kentucky defeated Davidson and Buffalo. The talent level of Kentucky and the coaching of John Calipari should be the difference, so I will lay the points and take Kentucky.

The Friday matchup of interest has the top seeded Villanova Wildcats taking on West Virginia, with the Wildcats a 5.5-point favorite. The Wildcats are an excellent offensive team and one that won’t be afraid of the West Virginia press. Villanova led the country in points per game this season at almost 87 per game. Villanova should be able to get into a track meet with West Virginia and take care of the Mountaineers. I will lay the points and take Villanova on Friday and I will also play the game to go over the total.
