FIBA Basketball World Cup Free Betting Odds Analysis

It hasn’t been the smoothest run-up to the 2019 FIBA World Cup for Team USA, which wasn’t able to lure most of the country’s top talent and will instead feature a large number of young players. Even despite that, it is still favored to win the tournament. The FIBA World Cup will be hosted in China and has been expanded from 24 to 32 teams. The tournament is a qualification for the 2020 Summer Olympics, which will take the top two teams from Europe and the Americas, as well as the top team from Asia, Africa, and Oceania.

FIBA Odds Analysis

Despite no superstars, Team USA still has a very talented team which includes Donovan Mitchell, Kyle Lowry, Khris Middleton, De’Aaron Fox, Harrison Barnes and Jayson Tatum. It is the team to beat and has been labeled as the prohibitive favorite. The United States opens with round-robin play against Turkey, the Czech Republic and Japan. It would be an upset if Team USA lost any of those games. It is a -8000 favorite to win the group so there is virtually no chance any other team manages to pull off the unthinkable.

The main contender to Team USA at the FIBA World Cup is Serbia, which boasts NBA players Bogdan Bogdanovic as well as Boban Marjonovic. Beyond those two, this is a team that plays together often and has built some good chemistry. Serbia is the -650 favorite to win its group, with Italy expected to be the top contender.

Team USA has the most talent on paper, but the issue is that the team is thrown together haphazardly and never builds a lot of chemistry. Sometimes that isn’t an issue, as the Dream Team famously proved back in 1992. However, there have been subsequent tournaments on the world stage in which the cohesion of other groups proved to be too much to overcome.

The USA and Serbian teams are the top contenders to win the FIBA tournament. However, Greece is an interesting longshot choice because it has one of the best players in the NBA on its team in Giannis Antetkounmpo. He is an absolute superstar and will be the most talented team in this tournament. The issue is that Greece does not have anywhere near the depth that the other top teams do.

Greece is the favorite to win its group but it will be interesting to see just how far this team can go without very many upper-tier players.

Key Stats or Trends

Team USA has won the past two FIBA World Cups. They defeated Serbia in the 2014 finals and knocked off Turkey in 2010 for the championship. Gregg Popovich is the head coach this year and Steve Kerr is an assistant, so the teaching will be done at an extremely high level.

Even though this is basically the ‘B’ squad being sent to China, if Team USA is focused it still easily has the most talented team in the field. Popovich is a great asset and will get the most out of this group. While there could be a scare or two, Team USA should be in the driver’s seat to win the 2019 FIBA World Cup.
