Atlantic Division Betting Odds And Preview

The Atlantic Division was easily the best the Eastern Conference had to offer a year ago. It boasted the eventual NBA champion Toronto Raptors as well as serious contenders the Philadelphia 76ers and Boston Celtics. There has been some serious player movement this offseason, shaking up the division. It is still lining up to be a good one, but even though the Raptors are trying to repeat as NBA champions they are not even the favorites in the Atlantic due to the offseason departure of Kawhi Leonard. It is not a surprise to see the Philadelphia 76ers as the team to beat in the current NBA odds, as they have two premier players and a talented squad capable of competing for the 2019-20 title.

Atlantic Division Odds Analysis

The 76ers pushed the Raptors to seven NBA games in their playoff series before succumbing, and return the star duo of Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons to lead the way. The Milwaukee Bucks are still the team to beat in the East this year, but Philly is widely expected to give them a run for their money. Embiid and Simmons are both a year wiser and yet comfortably in their athletic prime, so they could both have the best seasons of their careers. The team re-signed forward Tobias Harris and also made a big move to grab Al Horford for some help down low. Jimmy Butler and J.J. Redick are gone, but this is still a dangerous team.

The Celtics were the preseason favorites to win the Atlantic a season ago but never lived up to the hype. They are expected to be in the mix again this year but have a new look. Not only is Horford gone, but so is star point guard Kyrie Irving, who signed with Atlantic division foe the Nets this offseason. Boston did bring in Kemba Walker, and there is still a lot of talent on the roster. If things jell better this season, the Celtics could surprise people and push for the division crown.

The Raptors won the Atlantic a year ago and finished with the No. 2 seed in the East. They then went on to beat the Celtics in the conference finals and the Warriors for the NBA championship. Many of the team’s best players are back, including Kyle Lowry and Pascal Siakam. However, the loss of Leonard leads a big-time void. Even so, the oddsmakers seem to be overreacting, putting Toronto as such a big underdog in the division. This could still be a very good team.

The Nets may be a year away from being a true contender in the Atlantic. Irving is healthy and ready to lead the way and Brooklyn also made another huge splash by signing Kevin Durant this offseason. The problem is that Durant could be rehabilitating his Achilles injury for much or all of the season, and that absence could leave the team closer to .500 than the top of the division.

The team that is practically guaranteed to finish last in the Atlantic is the Knicks. They were hoping to land a marquee free agent or two this summer like Durant or Leonard but came up empty-handed. They have few game-changers and are going to struggle badly once again. There is virtually no chance New York wins the division.

Atlantic Division Odds Prediction

The 76ers are the rightful favorite, but the odds are too steep to pick them. The Raptors are the best value bet. They were good before Leonard arrived, and should be able to be competitive with the current roster on hand. Embiid has dealt with injury issues in his career, and if he happens to miss a significant stretch of the season, it would open up the division to others. Toronto has been listed as too big of an underdog and is the right pick to win the Atlantic once again in 2019-20.
