Top Contenders

There are eight players listed with odds of less than +2000. Antetokounmpo is the favorite, followed by Curry, Harden, Anthony Davis, LeBron James, Kawhi Leonard, Joel Embiid and Nikola Jokic. There is a very good chance that the winner will be one of these eight players. There is not much value in taking the Greek Freek, as his odds are simply too low. There is far more value in taking Curry, as he will have to do a lot this NBA season, as the Warriors no longer have Kevin Durant and Golden State will be without Klay Thompson for much of the season. Curry could be an excellent bet at odds of about 5-1 and keep in mind that he has won this award twice previously.

Harden won the MVP award two years ago, but it is hard to see him putting up huge numbers again now that the Rockets have Russell Westbrook. The same problem exists for Davis and James, as they play on the same team and they will likely split the scoring duties. Embiid and Jokic probably should be in the longshot category, but for now they have odds of less than 20-1.

Factors to Consider

When you bet the MVP keep in mind that winning an MVP in consecutive years is really difficult to do. The most recent player to win two straight MVP’s was Curry and he improved his scoring by more than six points, as he averaged 23.8 points per game in his first MVP season and 30.1 in his second. If Giannis is to win a second straight MVP he is almost assuredly going to have to average over 30 points per game this season.

You may not be aware that only two MVP winners have ever played with another first team player in their MVP season. That means that it is going to be difficult for James or Davis to win the award. It may also hurt the chances of Leonard and George who are playing together and Harden and Westbrook who are now teammates.

One of the best predictors of the MVP is team wins. The best player on the best team has a really good chance to win the MVP. There have been 43 MVP awards since the merge and 27 of those players played on the team that finished with the best record in the league. Antetokounmpo won the award last season and the Bucks had the best record. If the Nuggets end up having a great season and finishing with the top record in the Western Conference then Jokic could be an interesting darkhorse this season.

While Jokic is an interesting choice, the best choice could be Curry. He has won the MVP in the past, he is going to lead his team in scoring, and the Warriors should still be a really good team this season.
