The Rockets have one of the best records in the league but they have been just a so-so bet against the spread. They were just 3-4 ATS in their first seven road games, but there is a big trend on the total in Houston’s road games. The Rockets went under in six of their first seven road games. Houston is averaging about 119 points per game to lead the league in scoring, while they are giving up about 113 points per game which is 21st in the league. James Harden leads the team and the league in scoring at about 39 points per contest.
The Clippers have been far better at home this season than on the road. They are coming off a high profile matchup on Wednesday, as they hosted the Celtics and now they get a rematch with the Rockets on Friday. Los Angeles was 7-2 ATS in their first nine home games, with seven of those nine games going under the total. The Clippers are averaging about 113 points per NBA game which is 10th in the league and they are giving up about 106 points per contest, also 10th in the league. The Clippers have been led by Kawhi Leonard who is averaging about 27 points per contest. It is worth noting that the Clippers didn’t have Paul George for the first month of the season, but George is healthy and in the lineup now.
The Clippers have won six of the last ten, but Houston has won the last two meetings, including 102-93 in Houston last week. Six of the last ten in the series have gone under the total. The teams have split their last ten meetings in Los Angeles both straight up and against the spread. Six of the last ten in LA have gone over the total.
I split last week when picking this game, losing the side, but winning the total, as the Rockets won with the game going under the total. This game on Friday night is a revenge game of sorts for Los Angeles since they lost last week in Houston, but I don’t know that the revenge angle is the key factor in this game. The Clippers are coming off a big game against Boston on Wednesday, so I am a little bit leery of laying points with Los Angeles in this contest. I think the better choice is to play the total. Oddsmakers are still putting up very high totals on the Rockets and Houston has started to go under the total a little bit more and Houston’s defense has gotten a little better. There is also no question that the trends in this game are in favor of the under, both overall and in the series. I will take Friday’s game under the total.
Rockets vs. Clippers Score Prediction: Clippers 108, Rockets 107
