First Best of Five

Philadelphia Fusion -120

London Spitfire +100

These were not the teams anyone expected to make it to the finals. London and Philadelphia were the No. 5 and No. 6 seeds coming into the postseason, but both sides were able to pull off upsets in consecutive weeks to make it to this point.

Philadelphia has had the tougher road. The Fusion held on to knock off the Boston Uprising in the Quarterfinals, but then had to face the heavily favored New York Excelsior in the Semifinals. They were sizable underdogs coming into that match, yet they were able to sweep the first series and win a memorable tiebreaker map in the second series in order to advance.

Coming into the season, London were one of the three favorites to win the first Overwatch League. The Spitfire had acquired a talented roster, but they sputtered after winning Stage One. They stumbled into the playoffs, and few people expected them to beat both Los Angeles teams.

London looked down and out after being swept in their first series by the LA Gladiators. Yet the Spitfire were able to regroup in order to sweep the Gladiators in their next two series and dropped just one map in their win over the Valiant.

These two teams met four times in the regular season and split the season series 2-2. London swept Philadelphia 4-0 in Stage 1 and Stage 2, while the Fusion had the upper hand in Stage 3 and Stage 4 winning the former 3-2 and the latter 3-1.

The Match-Up

The best match-up in this series should be between the DPS players. Philadelphia’s Carpe and Eqo were incredible in the team’s upset of NYXL, frustrating their opponents with relentless pressure. Both players were able to put up 40 kills in the first series against the Excelsior and carried the day in the second too. Eqo had 59 kills and played fantastically on Hanzo and Pharah, while Carpe racked up an incredible 74 kills on Tracer and Widowmaker.

London’s DPS duo were not nearly as aggressive in their win over the Valiant, instead relying on positioning and strategy in order to succeed. Birdring has played Widowaker in the vast majority of his matches and has been deadly on the hero. Profit continues to be the glue guy that makes it all happen though with his utility on multiple champions. He picked up kills on six different characters in the second series.

Prediction

The Spitfire do have an advantage in the support role. Bdosin has been one of the best supports all season long, and he has been able to consistently help out his team and snipe opponents on Zenyatta. However, this meta seems to de-emphasize the support role more than previous ones, and that’s why I’ll be backing Philadelphia. The Fusion have shown an ability to confuse opponents with their strategy, and the vast improvement in their tank play has helped their DPS players a ton.

The key will be finding a way to counter Profit. Profit’s versatility has been key for London, and if Philadelphia can counter him that will be huge.
