BETCRIS CFL Edmonton Eskimos Winnipeg Blue Bombers

The CFL’s regular season kicks off this week, with several intriguing matchups on the docket. One of the biggest showdowns will feature the Edmonton Eskimos against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. The teams finished 2017 with two of the best records throughout the regular season but each fell short of the Grey Cup. Both teams return a lot of talent and believe they have what it takes to claim the Canadian Football League championship.

The Eskimos finished 2017 with a record of 12-6. They knocked off the Blue Bombers in the West Division Semifinals, picking up the 39-32 victory. Edmonton came one win away from the Grey Cup but fell to the Calgary Stampeders by a score of 32-28 in the divisional finals.

The Eskimos and Blue Bombers are both projected to be among the main contenders for the Grey Cup this season but one of the teams is dealing with a crucial injury which could have a large impact on this matchup in CFL betting.

The Edmonton Eskimos and Winnipeg Blue Bombers will face off on Thursday, June 14, 2018, at Investors Group Field in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

We'll have CFL odds at BetCris available for every game of the 2018 CFL season.

Odds Analysis

The Edmonton Eskimos have been listed as 7.5-point favorites to win the regular season opener over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. The spread is pretty high but the bettors are on board as more than 73 percent of the action is on Edmonton to cover.

The scoring total is listed at 50 points, with the “under” the more popular choice because of a quarterback injury that could affect the offense on one side of this matchup. The moneyline has yet to be released but Edmonton will certainly be the sizable favorite to claim the win in the opener in CFL betting.

Injury Report

The Blue Bombers had a dynamic offense in 2017 and were planning on putting up points in bunches this season. They may do so later in the year, but are currently dealing with a knee injury to starting quarterback Matt Nichols that is expected to sideline him for four-to-six weeks. Nichols is one of the more prolific passers in the CFL and this is one of the biggest injuries early on in the CFL season.

Winnipeg has named rookie Chris Streveler the quarterback in Nichols’ absence. He is only a rookie but won the starting job, which was unexpected following Nichols’ injury. It will be interesting to see how he fares but it certainly won’t be an easy situation on the road against a talented foe.

If both these teams were at full strength, this would be a pretty intriguing matchup. The Blue Bombers would likely still be the underdogs because of the road location but only slightly. Nichols’ injury changes things and makes the Eskimos the strong favorites.

Edmonton surged out to a 7-0 start a season ago and would love to duplicate that feat in 2018 to immediately vault to contender status. While winning that many games in a row can never be expected, the Eskimos should at least jump out to a 1-0 start with a win over the Blue Bombers.

Later matchups could look different once Nichols is back in the fold, but for now Edmonton is the clear favorite in CFL wagering. The Blue Bombers are the pick to cover in a game that could be closer than expected. The Game of the Week looks like an intriguing one between a pair of potential contenders, but one that could be undermanned in the opener.

CFL ATS Pick: Edmonton Eskimos 27, Winnipeg Blue Bombers 21
