The San Francisco 49ers finished the 2017 strong and made some notable additions this offseason. The expectations are much higher this season than they have been in a while and we will get a first look at the group in their preseason opener against the Dallas Cowboys. The 49ers have a burgeoning star quarterback in Jimmy Garoppolo and it will be interesting to see how much time he will get, if any, in this contest.
The Cowboys are looking for a bounceback year but have a veteran group so this might be a showcase for most of the youngsters as the stars look on.

It’s tough to know how the exhibition slate will go as the contests are dominated by playing time for backups. Check to see if either coach plans to give his starters significant reps in NFL wagering.

The 49ers are listed as 3.5-point favorites to open up their preseason contests. San Francisco is at home so that is likely a big reason why it is the favorite. The Cowboys are getting more than 72 percent of the action, which makes sense considering the relative coin flip nature of these games.
The scoring total is listed at 35 points, with the “under” the more popular choice. The 49ers are listed as the -190 favorites while the Cowboys are +163 underdogs. The money is coming in pretty evenly on both in NFL betting.
The 49ers are not expected to have cornerback Richard Sherman in this one as he deals with a hamstring injury. The standout cover man was able to begin training camp with his teammates despite tearing his Achilles last season but is now dealing with a new ailment.
Sherman wasn’t expected to get much action anyway but the team will likely be cautious with him as he should be a key piece for the team once the regular season gets underway. At this time of year, any significant player with a lingering injury will likely be held out as a precaution because there is no sense in pushing the envelope with nothing on the line.
While it’s hard to know which players will be in the game, the coach advantage has to go to Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers. He is a maestro at calling an offense, continually making it tough for defenses to adjust. San Francisco should be in good shape when the second- and third-team defenses are in for Dallas as those inexperienced players may not be ready for all of the tricks up his sleeve.
Shanahan isn’t going to reveal too many wrinkles but there is a lot of misdirection in his regular offensive playcalls.

The Shanahan factor pushes this one toward the 49ers even if Garoppolo sees little or no work. Look for San Francisco to put up more points than usual for a preseason game and come away with the win.
The expectations are high in San Francisco and this game will validate how impressive the coaching is over there. The Cowboys aren’t going to sweat falling short too much as it is only the preseason, but they will head home with a loss while failing to cover in NFL gambling.
NFL ATS Pick: 49ers 24, Cowboys 14
