NFL Indianapolis Colts AFC South

The Indianapolis Colts are slight favorites to win the AFC South this season, while the Tennessee Titans are a close second choice. The Colts added quarterback Philip Rivers in the off-season and oddsmakers believe that his addition will push Indianapolis to the division title.

The Houston Texans are the third choice in the betting odds, as oddsmakers believe the loss of DeAndre Hopkins will be a big blow, while the Jacksonville Jaguars are a longshot. Let’s look at AFC South odds and each of the four teams.

NFL Game

Indianapolis Colts +120

The Colts are counting heavily on an aging quarterback to lead them this NFL season, as Philip Rivers takes the helm. Rivers wasn’t very good last season, as he threw 23 TDs to go along with 20 interceptions with the Chargers. Rivers has always put up big numbers, but he is known for making big mistakes in the clutch. He will be 38 years old when this season begins and it is hard to see how he is an upgrade from Jacoby Brissett.

The Colts added All-Pro defensive tackle DeForest Buckner from San Francisco in the off-season. His addition could be huge, as the Colts badly needed a big man in the middle of their defensive line. Indianapolis made a couple of interesting picks in the NFL Draft, taking wide receiver Michael Pittman from USC and running back Jonathan Taylor from Wisconsin. They also got quarterback Jacob Eason in the fourth round.

Tennessee Titans +145

The Titans are coming off a surprisingly good season and there is no reason to think they are going to take a step back. Ryan Tannehill proved that he is a capable NFL starter who can win games, and the Titans have an excellent running attack led by Derrick Henry who led the NFL in rushing last season. The Titans took tackle Isaiah Wilson in the first round of the NFL Draft and cornerback Kristian Fulton in the second round. Both players could start this season.

The Titans have the best defense in the division and if it comes down to which team makes the fewest mistakes, you have to like Tennessee’s chances this season.

Houston Texans +400

Just how important is a great receiver to an offense? We are going to find out this season, as the Texans practically gave away All-Pro DeAndre Hopkins to Arizona. The Texans still have Deshaun Watson at quarterback and he has proven to be one of the best signal callers in the league. Watson will have to do a lot more this season to make up for the loss of Hopkins. The problem for Houston is that they still are coached by Bill O’Brien who is also the GM. O’Brien has been a disaster as a general manager and not much better as a head coach.

Houston did nothing in the off-season to improve, as they traded away their first round pick to get Laremy Tunsil from Miami. Tunsil is not much of an upgrade and the Texans got nothing in the NFL Draft of note. The Texans did decide to turn over the play calling duties this season to new offensive coordinator Tim Kelly and Anthony Weaver takes over as the defensive coordinator. How can you have confidence in a team that has O’Brien running the show?

Jacksonville Jaguars +2500

The Jaguars have an exciting quarterback in Gardner Minshew but he is not at the level of most quarterbacks in the NFL. Minshew makes a lot of exciting plays, but he struggles with his accuracy and he simply doesn’t have the talent of other top quarterbacks in the league. The Jaguars hired former Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden as their offensive coordinator for this season and it will be interesting to see how he works with Minshew. Gruden is known for helping young quarterbacks and Jacksonville’s offense should be improved this season.

The Jaguars had a good draft, as they got CJ Henderson and K’Lavon Chaisson in the first round, but Jacksonville is not going to be a contender this season, despite a good NFL Draft.
