NFL Football Odds New Orleans Saints at Los Angeles Chargers

Drew Brees has yet to see the field in the preseason but chances are he will make his one and only appearance in Week 3 when the New Orleans Saints travel to take on the Los Angeles Chargers. Brees used to play for this franchise but the Chargers famously let him walk in free agency to give Philip Rivers the reins.

Both quarterbacks have had nice careers and are still starting in their late-30s, but Brees is the more accomplished signal-caller. Both of these teams are projected to push for a playoff berth in 2018 and this is the week of the preseason in which the starters get the most action.

Football Sports Betting

The Saints and Chargers are both stacked with talent and the first half could be fun to watch. The backups will likely take over the rest of the way, where the outcome gets harder to predict in NFL wagering.

This NFL football game between the New Orleans Saints and Los Angeles Chargers will be held at the StubHub Center in Los Angeles, California at 8 p.m ET on Saturday, August 25th, 2018. The contest will be nationally televised on CBS.

Odds Analysis

The Chargers are listed as 2.5-point favorites, which is basically the margin given for the home field advantage. This one features a pair of good teams and it could be close. The Saints are getting about two-thirds of the action, which makes sense since in toss-up games it’s smart to take the points.

The scoring total is listed at 44 points. Both of these quarterbacks can really sling it, but the defenses have improved. The second half likely won’t have as much scoring as the first with all of the reserves in the game. The “under” is the more popular choice in NFL betting.

Quarterback Watch

Brees didn’t put up gaudy numbers last season but that is because the New Orleans running game was much more dynamic than expected. Even so, his arm talent is still among the best in the NFL and that threat always keeps defenses honest. Brees warmed up for the Week 2 preseason game against the Cardinals but didn’t see any action. Keep an eye on any updates during the week. If coach Sean Payton is going to keep Brees on a short leash to save him for the regular season, that would affect both the spread and the scoring total.

The same can be said for Rivers, another prolific passer. He was 6-of-7 for 62 yards in the team’s second preseason game against the Seahawks after sitting out the opener. Rivers should play once again in this one, and any comments about his projected snap count would be very valuable when it comes to NFL preseason betting.

Injury Update

Chargers cornerback Casey Hayward reportedly injured his hamstring in practice this week, although early indications are it’s not a huge deal. Even so, Hayward, one of the top cover men in the NFL, might be held out of this game as a precaution. Star pass-rusher Joey Bosa is dealing with a foot injury and may also miss the game.

That is two huge pieces for the Chargers, which could help tilt the scales in favor of New Orleans.

Free NFL ATS Picks

If Brees and Rivers play the same amount of time, New Orleans is the easy choice. But it’s possible Brees only sees the field for a few series before getting pulled. It’s hard to gauge this one without knowing the quarterback playing time allotment, but when in doubt, grab the points. The Chargers don’t have much of a home field advantage in Los Angeles yet and the Saints should be able to pull out the win in NFL wagering.

NFL ATS Pick: New Orleans Saints 20, Los Angeles Chargers 17
