Sam Darnold had a fine preseason debut, showing flashes of why the New York Jets chose him with the No. 3 overall pick in the draft. The rookie quarterback is in a battle for the starting signal-caller spot and hopes to have another promising showing when the Jets travel to face the Washington Redskins in the second preseason game.

Washington does not have a quarterback controversy but is aiming to break in Alex Smith after acquiring him via trade from the Chiefs in the offseason. The Redskins offense will aim to develop a nice rhythm in this game. The starters on both sides should see more time in this game as both sides prepare for the regular season.

The Jets are the slight underdogs on the road in this contest in NFL gambling.

This NFL football game between the New York Jets and Washington Redskins will be held at FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland at 8 p.m ET on Thursday, August 16th, 2018. The contest will be nationally televised on ESPN.

No Love Lost

The Redskins and Jets took part in joint practices in this week and it did not go well. There was a massive brawl after an alleged cheap shot in one of the practices, as numerous players from both sides jumped in.

At this point in the preseason, the teams are tired of squaring off with teammates and like seeing a different colored jersey. After the emotions ran over during the week, expect for this contest to have a little bit more intensity than a standard exhibition affair.

Injury Update

The Redskins had high hopes for rookie running back Derrius Guice but he was lost for the season with a torn ACL in his preseason debut against the Patriots. It was a big blow as Guice was likely to start, and now it could be running back by committee moving forward for Washington.

Samaje Perine and Chris Thompson will likely be relied on to carry the load, so keep an eye on how they look in this one. Other running backs on the roster will now have a greater opportunity to make the team and try to carve out a role.

The Jets are on the road, which is why they are the underdogs, but the state of their quarterback competition will give them the edge. Darnold will be giving it his all, while veterans Josh McCown and Teddy Bridgewater are also aiming to be in the mix for the starting job.

Bridgewater was particularly sharp in the preseason opener and he is a former starter in Minnesota before a knee injury sidelined him for two seasons. New York will take this game more seriously than the Redskins and because of that, it will come away with the win.

The Jets may not have a bunch of success in the regular season because the offense doesn’t have a bunch of weapons, but they have what it takes to put together a fine preseason, which will include a victory over Washington in NFL betting.

NFL ATS Pick: New York Jets 24, Washington Redskins 20
