Super Bowl LIV between the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers takes place on Sunday and can be seen on FOX. It is a matchup between two of the highest scoring teams in the NFL, as the 49ers finished 2nd in the NFL in points per game this season, while the Chiefs were 5th in points per game. You can look at a variety of things for Super Bowl LIV but this game comes down to two things; whether the 49ers can slow down Mahomes and whether or not the Chiefs can stop the San Francisco running attack.
The Chiefs held the Texans and Titans to under 100 yards in their two playoff games, but they now face a San Francisco offense that was 2nd in the NFL in rushing yards this season. Raheem Mostert was unstoppable two weeks ago when he ran all over the Packers, so if the Chiefs are going to win this game they have to slow him down.
On the other side, the 49ers have to find a way to contain Mahomes who is 24-7 in his 31 career starts. He has completed 65.9 percent of his passes for 9,412 yards with 76 touchdowns and 18 interceptions. The Chiefs have not been stopped that often with Mahomes under center. They have scored less than 20 points just once with Mahomes at quarterback. The 49ers feature a defense that has a superb defensive line led by Nick Bosa and Dee Ford and they have a solid linebacking corps led by Dre Greenlaw and Kwon Alexander and the secondary features Richard Sherman.
The 49ers are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games as an underdog. The 49ers are 6-1 ATS vs. a team with a winning record. The Chiefs are 5-0 ATS vs. a team with a winning record. The Over is 4-1-1 in the 49ers last 6 games overall. The Over is 7-2 in the Chiefs last 9 vs. a team with a winning record.
In our early preview of the Super Bowl we leaned to the 49ers and nothing has changed that opinion. The Chiefs have some superstar players in Mahomes, Travis Kelce and Tyreek Hill, but the 49ers have the better team. I still lean to taking the 49ers in this game and I also want to mention the total. The public is pounding this game over the total and many sportsbooks expect the wiseguys to come in and bet the under on Super Bowl Sunday. I am not so sure that will happen. The Kansas City defense looked decent against Houston and Tennessee, but the 49ers are a level above each of those two teams and it is not like the Chiefs were great on defense in either of those two wins. Kansas City is not going to stop the 49ers consistently on Sunday and I don’t think the 49ers defense is going to totally shut down Mahomes and Kansas City. I rarely like to agree with the public, but oddsmakers made a bad total on this game when it first came out and I still don’t think it is high enough. I will also play the game to go over the total.
