At the beginning of the season the Boston Bruins were among the betting favorites to win the 2019 Stanley Cup. Some of that was based on their consistency as a top tier contender almost every year. But much of it too was based on their name brand and Original Six pedigree. Much like their Boston brethren of the Patriots, Red Sox and Celtics the Bruins are a marquee and historic brand with fans and gamblers. On January 3 NOBODY was predicting a Stanley Cup for the ST. Louis Blues. At that time, they had the worst record in the National Hockey League. But from that point forward they have been the best team in hockey.

Boston’s Path to the Eastern Conference Title
The Bruins finished second to the Tampa Bay Lightning in the Atlantic Division and caught a break when the Lighting, who had the best regular season record in the NHL by far, were swept out of the playoffs in the first round by the Columbus Blue Jackets. After rallying from a 3-2 deficit against the Toronto Maple Leafs in the first round to win in games six and seven, the Bruins wore down Columbus in six games for a second-round victory. The upstart Carolina Hurricanes never had a shot in the Eastern Conference Final as Boston brought out the broom with a four-game sweep.
St. Louis’s Path to the Western Conference Title
In the first round against the Central Division champion Winnipeg Jets the Blues scored a six-game upset to move on to face the Dallas Stars. The second round series with the Stars went to a double overtime seventh game that was won by local homegrown hero Pat Maroon’s goal. Then in the Western Conference Final the Blues, much like Boston, wore down and grinded out the San Jose Sharks in six games.

In this era of more analytics and emphasis on speed it is interesting to note that two of the “heavier” throw back teams are in the Stanley Cup Final. Each team is well coached with scoring, defensive depth, and strong goaltending. As good as Boston has looked the Blues have been the most reliable team in the NHL since reaching the depths of last place at New Year’s. When two teams are similar and basically even the dog is the way to go.
