The Colorado Avalanche are a bona fide team of the future with their best years to come. Led by 2013 number one draft choice Nathan MacKinnon the Avalanche have a young foundation that is set to contend for the Stanley Cup. By contrast the San Jose Sharks have plenty of playoff experience and are considered to be a team that has a closing Stanley Cup window. Which is another way to say it’s now or never for the Sharks. Certainly 39-year-old Jumbo Joe Thornton epitomizes that factor as he is trying to win the first Stanley Cup of his 20-year career.

Avalanche vs. Sharks TV Coverage: NBCSN
This series is dead even with two wins for each team. Both the Avalanche and the Sharks have split two games both at home and on the road. Game four saw the Avalanche score a home 3-0 payout. Game six will be at Colorado and, if necessary, game seven will take place at the Shark Tank.
Philipp Grubauer posted the game four shutout for Colorado and has had a strong playoff season by way of his .930 save percentage and 2.17 goals against average. By contrast Martin Jones has been inconsistent at times but better since he posted three straight wins over Vegas to win that first round series. Jones has a playoff save percentage of .910 with a 2.84 goals against average.
The Matchup’s Top Players
San Jose center Logan Couture has been on fire for the playoffs with a total of nine goals, three assists and a plus one. The Sharks have two top tier defensemen with Brent Burns and Erik Karlsson. Burns has four goals with seven assists and a plus one. Karlsson is one of the most highly skilled offensive defensemen in the NHL and has 10 playoff assists. Slick center Tomas Hertl has six goals with four assists and a plus one. Sharks star center Joe Pavelski remains questionable for this game.
Catching everyone’s attention for his dominant playoff play has been Colorado center Nathan MacKinnon with six goals and seven assists. Right wing Mikko Rantanen has five goals with eight assists. Defenseman Tyson Barrie has shown well with one goal and seven assists with effective power play quarterbacking.
The Avalanche have been a reliable betting value on the road recently. Colorado has three payouts in their five post season away games this year with only two of those five games going over the total. But the Sharks have been quite strong on home ice in the playoffs. San Jose has won four of their six post season games at the Shark Tank with all six of those games going over the total.
Head to Head Matchup Stats
Colorado has drowned gamblers in red ink with their past performance at SAP Center. The Avalanche have gotten the money in only two of their last 19 games against the Sharks at San Jose. And none of the last 11 meetings between these teams at the Shark Tank stayed under the total.
Avalanche vs. Sharks Free Picks
This has been an even series for sure but the Sharks dominance at home against the Avalanche cannot be ignored. With all else even home ice rates the edge.
Avalanche vs. Sharks Free Pick: Bet the San Jose Sharks
