Stanley Cup Final Blues vs. Bruins

The big worry for the Boston Bruins and gamblers taking a flier on them was their 11-day layoff between clinching the Eastern Conference championship and game one of the Stanley Cup Final. The ultimate question heading into game one was “will it be rest or rust?” As it turned out the answer was “both”. The St. Louis Blues jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period. But midway through the second the Bruins steamroller kicked into high gear. A combination of St. Louis mistakes and Boston power propelled the B’s to a 4-2 win.

Series Schedule

Boston took a 4-2 win in game one to take a series lead of 1-0. Following this second game of the Stanley Cup Final, the series will shift to St. Louis for games three and four. That third game will take place on Saturday night with game four set for Monday. Both NHL Hockey games are set to start at 8 p.m. ET. If necessary, game five will be at Boston on Thursday, June 6 at 8 p.m. ET.

Blues Implode

St. Louis showed well in the first period but that seemed to go to their heads in the second. The first signs were stupid and selfish penalties by Joel Edmondson and Oskar Sundqvist. In particular the penalty to Sundqvist was costly as it resulted in a game tying goal by Charlie McAvoy. And from that point on the Bruins took over.

Rust to Rest

Even some of the Bruins admitted to having to shake off the rust in the first part of the game. But Boston head coach Bruce Cassidy made adjustments that unleashed the Bruins in the second half of the game. Boston outshot the Blues 18-3 in the second period to take command of the game. St. Louis and head coach Craig Berube had no answers. The four-line steamrolling depth of the Bruins proved to be overpowering.

Binnington Shows Well

St. Louis did have some takeaways that can be used to fuel their efforts in game two. The most important factor of all in the Blues favor was rookie goaltender Jordan Binnington. Early on the St. Louis netminder stood tall in the face of Boston pressure. Overall Binnington stopped 34 out of 37 shots to keep the Blues in the game.

Blues Have Opportunity

St. Louis can quickly turn the series back around with a win in game two. Now they will need better production from down the lineup to match the Bruins depth. Most important of all the elimination of self-inflicted wounds will be vital to their efforts. As bad as their game one implosion turned out to be, a win on Wednesday will give St. Louis home ice advantage as the series heads back to the gateway city.

Head to Head Matchup Stats

In the last ten games between these teams each side has gotten the money five times. Three of the last five in this head to head series have gone under the total. Boston has won four of their last six at home against the Blues.
