NHL Vegas Golden Knights vs. San Jose Sharks

Among the characteristics that set the Stanley Cup Playoffs apart as the best post season in all of sports is that it is it is an entirely different type of game as compared to the regular season. Despite bottom falling out from both the San Jose Sharks and Vegas Golden Knights at the end of the regular season the fact remains that none of that matters come playoff time. You can ask the President’s Trophy winning Tampa Bay Lightning or the 2010 Washington Capitals about that. So far in their playoff series the Sharks and Golden Knights have demonstrated their may attributes as top contenders as well as the weaknesses that may ultimately prove to be fatal for their playoff aspirations.

Head to Head

Goaltending Analysis

A major problem for the Sharks has been their inconsistent goaltending with Martin Jones. The five-year veteran has posted a terrible .849 save percentage with a 5.23 goals against average. Even during the regular season Jones was inconsistent with a save percentage of .896. His poor play down the stretch was among the main reasons why the Sharks foundered so badly and lost out to the Calgary Flames for the top spot in the Pacific Division. Jones was so bad in game two of this series that he was pulled.

By contrast Marc Andre Fleury has posted a save percentage of .897 in the playoffs so far with a 3.35 goals against average. In the regular NHL season Fleury posted a save percentage of .913 with a 2.51 goals against average. When Fleury went down with a lower body issue in the last few weeks of the regular season the Golden Knights floundered badly. His health may prove to be the key to this series.

The Matchup’s Top Players

Vegas has been led in this series by right wing Mark Stone and his six goals. Stone had the hattrick in Vegas’ 6-3 game three win. This is nothing new as Stone posted a strong regular NHL season with 33 goals, 40 assists and a plus 17. San Jose center Logan Couture scored two goals with two assists to start this series and had a solid regular season with 27 goals and 43 assists. Meanwhile slick puck handler Tomas Hertl has two goals and an assist.
