NHL Odds Jets vs Blues

For contrarian gamblers the NHL Western Conference Playoff series between the Winnipeg Jets and the St. Louis Blues has had much to offer starting with the fact that the road team was victorious in the first four games of this series. After stumbling badly down the stretch in the regular season and losing the first two games of this series the Jets have begun to show what made them a preseason favorite to win the Western Conference. For the Blues they were one of the best teams in the NHL in the second half of the regular season but there were legitimate worries that they would be running out of gas after expending so much energy to make the post season.

Series Schedule

This is the sixth NHL game of this best of seven series. Should a game seven be necessary it will be held in Winnipeg on Monday, April 22.

Records and Metrics

The Winnipeg Jets have a record of 49-32-4-1 and were 24-18-1 on the road this NHL season. On the over under board the Jets were 43-35-8 over the total with a road mark of 19-24 under the total. Winnipeg ranked seventh in the NHL for goal scoring, fourth for the power play, 15th for goals against the 22nd for the penalty kill.

The St. Louis Blues were 47-29-7-3 with a home record of 24-16-2-1. The Blues were 36-46-4 under the total while going a break even 21-21-1 at home with totals. St. Louis posted NHL metrics of 15th for goal scoring, 10th for the power play, fifth for goals against and ninth for the penalty kill.

Goaltending Analysis

For countless years the Blues have been in search for a bona fide franchise type goaltender that they really haven’t had since Mike Liut was between the pipes over 35 years ago. They may have finally found one in raw rookie Jordan Binnington. The 25 year old out of Richmond Hill, Ontario posted a .927 save percentage with five shutouts in the regular season. However, playoff hockey has been tougher on Binnington as his save percentage dropped to .902. Jordan was 24-5-1 in the regular season and posted five shutouts.

For the Jets Connor Hellebuyck has been a key asset and the anchor goaltender for the past three seasons. This year Hellebuyck posted a .913 save percentage in the regular season but was often inconsistent down the stretch. Part of Hellebuyck’s problem was a lack of defensive support in front of him. In the playoffs he has answered the call with a .916 save percentage. In 62 regular hockey season starts the workmanlike Hellebuyck posted a 34-23-3 record with two shutouts.

Overall Hellebuyck may rate the edge due to past playoff experience compared to the rookie Binnington, who is still needed to carry the load in the NHL playoffs as he did in the regular season.

The Matchup’s Top Players

Winnipeg left wing Kyle Connor has shown well in the playoffs so far with three goals and two assists. Right winger Patrik Laine has also lit the lamp three times. St. Louis defenseman Alex Pietrangelo has long been one of the top offensive defensemen in the NHL and has tallied five assists so far. Right wing Vladimir Tarasenko has two goals and lit the lamp 33 times in the regular season.
