Western Conference Final Update

The Sharks have blown a 2-1 lead in this best of seven series with back to back losses that have put the Blues in command. St. Louis won game five by a score of 5-0 as Jaden Schwartz scored the hat trick for the Blues. Jordan Binnington stopped all 21 San Jose shots for his first career playoff shutout. If the Blues win game six, they will clinch this series and advance to the Stanley Cup Final against the Boston Bruins. If game seven is necessary it will be at San Jose on Thursday.

Berube Changes Series

After San Jose’s controversial 5-3 overtime win in game three where a blown call on a hand pass during the Sharks winning goal loomed large, St. Louis head coach Craig Berube refused to wallow and whine about it. Berube immediately told his players to focus on game four and to let the bad call and loss go as there was nothing that could be done about it. Berube’s stand proved to be decisive as the Blues went on to win the next two games and played well in the process.

Sharks Karlsson Wearing Down

The San Jose Sharks and in particular star defenseman Erik Karlsson seem to be wearing down from the grind of the post season. Karlsson has something wrong with him as he could manage only 10:32 time on ice for the fifth game. In the NHL teams will hide any and all injury information until after a series but it has become apparent that something is wrong with Karlsson.

Not Raising Kane

Another problem for the Sharks is the terrible dry spell suffered by left wing Evander Kane. Kane scored 30 goals to go with 26 assists in the regular season. However, in the Stanley Cup Playoffs Kane has only two goals with six assists and an ugly minus five in 19 games. Also problematic are the recent woes of Logan Couture. San Jose’s leading scorer with 14 goals and six assists in the playoffs has been shut out in their last two games.

Schwartz Explodes

St. Louis has been catapulted to the brink of the Stanley Cup Final by left wing Jaden Schwartz. In the regular season Schwartz scored only 11 goals in 69 games. But in the playoffs Schwartz has emerged as the Blues top weapon with 12 goals and four assists with a plus six.
