A collection of castoffs and misfits that were discarded like garbage has come together for one of the greatest success stories in the history of major league sports. Starting with general manager George McPhee and head coach Gerard Gallant, including star players such as Marc Andre Fleury, William Karlsson, Jonathan Marchessault, James Neal, Alex Tuch and more, the Vegas Golden Knights were all kicked to the curb by other teams to end up together as Pacific Division champions. Now they face their biggest test yet in facing the deep and well-balanced Winnipeg Jets in the Western Conference Final.

A Gallant Rise
After leading the Florida Panthers to a rare playoff appearance in 2015-16 head coach Gerard Gallant was mentioned as a coach of the year candidate and on the cusp of being a top tier coach. Yet 22 games into the following season he was photographed standing on the curb he was kicked too hailing a cab for a ride to the airport after being fired by the analytics geeks that had taken over management of the team. The photos were circulated all over the web and were emblematic of Florida’s foolishness as a failed franchise. The pictures are also poignant as far as it epitomizes what it means to be a Vegas Golden Knight. Like Gallant most of the Golden Knights fell out of favor with their past teams. They were not picked to make the playoffs. In fact, they were 500-1 longshots to win the Stanley Cup. Yet they pulled together under Gallant’s leadership to become one of the final four teams standing.
Brick by Bric
Unlike the Golden Knights the Winnipeg Jets have been methodically constructed since their re-birth in 2011 after arriving in a franchise shift from Atlanta where they were known as the Thrashers. While it has taken several years to get to this point the Jets are built to last with incredible roster depth and skill. General Manager Kevin Cheveldayoff may have been fired by other teams like Florida for not winning fast but Winnipeg gave him the necessary time to build. And now the investment in him and his plan is paying off. Head coach Paul Maurice has had his own long journey to this moment. He has gained respect for the way he has kept his team on an even keel while masterfully manipulating the lineup.
Matchup Factors to Watch
Vegas goaltender Marc Andre Fleury has a playoff save percentage of .951. there is legitimate concern about him being able to maintain that level of play in this round.
Vegas has gotten solid blue line play but their defensive corps is still not considered elite. They don’t have a bona fide number one blue liner like Winnipeg’s Dustin Byfuglien.
Golden Knights vs. Jets Free Picks
Vegas has earned respect for their improbable run. It was not an accident. But Winnipeg is deeper and has the better defensive corps.
