The Vegas Golden Knights are one of the greatest stories in the history of sports. Less than one year ago they didn’t even have a roster. Now they have a team that won the Western Conference championship. And nobody is calling it a fluke. For the Washington Capitals their Eastern Conference championship exercised the post season demons of their failed past. Always a great regular season team the Caps would fold like a house of cards in the playoffs. But not this year. In one of the most intriguing Stanley Cup Final series in memory the Golden Knights and Caps open up with game one tonight!

Game two of this best of seven Stanley Cup Final series will also be in Vegas on Wednesday. Then the teams travel to Washington for games three and four on Saturday and next Monday.
Washington was considered to be a team that had its window close on a realistic Stanley Cup run. Yet they won the Metropolitan Division in the regular season and are in the Stanley Cup Final for the first time in 20 years and just the second time since they joined the NHL as an expansion team in 1974.
The Caps had plenty of opportunity to lay down and die but instead they confronted tough challenges all spring with a courage and resilience that they have never before shown. Head coach Barry Trotz is coaching without a contract. That will certainly be remedied very soon either with the Caps are somewhere else. Trotz has coached up Alex Ovechkin to become a complete 200-foot player. Ovechkin has impressed all with his total game and passionate determination.
Washington has been the most profitable team on the board in road playoff games this spring and the second most profitable team overall against the playoff odds.
Golden Knights Indeed
Some fans are miffed that Vegas is in the Stanley Cup Final as a brand new first year expansion team. They forget that owner Bill Foley paid half a billion dollars to join the NHL and that nobody picked the Golden Knights to win the Stanley Cup when the season opened last October.
Masterfully constructed by general manager George McPhee the Golden Knights have used the fact that they were all cast offs from former teams as a rallying cry.
Head coach Gerard Gallant coaches without fear and concedes that his players will make mistakes. But instead of focusing on the negative he encourages full frontal assault hockey and rolls four lines eagerly. The confidence that he places in his team is contagious.
This is quite a showdown between Marc Andre Fleury of the Golden Knights and Braden Holtby of the Capitals.
Holtby was on the bench for the first two games but was called upon to bail the Caps out of a 0-2 hole against Columbus in the first round. He responded with a .924 save percentage and two shutouts, both of which occurred in the last two games of the Eastern Conference Final.
Fleury has a save percentage of .947 this post season with a 1.68 goals against average and four shutouts.
Players to Watch
Florida castoff Jonathan Marchessault leads Vegas with eight goals, 10 assists and a plus ten.
