This best of seven Stanley Cup Final series is tied at one win for each team. Game four will be Monday night in Washington. Game five will return to Vegas for Thursday night.
Washington center Evgeny Kuznetsov is questionable with a forearm injury for game three. Kuznetsov is the Capitals leading scorer in the playoffs with 11 goals and 14 assists with a plus eight. This would be a critical loss for the Caps if Kuznetsov can’t answer the bell.
Vegas netminder Marc Andre Fleury has been the backbone of the team since opening night last October. In the post season “The Flower” has posted a .939 save percentage with a 1.88 goals against average and four shutouts. However, in the Stanley Cup Final, Fleury has dipped. In the first two games he has made 47 saves on 54 shots which is far below par for his performance on the year.
Braden Holtby has a .921 save percentage for the Capitals in the playoffs this year with two shutouts and a 2.19 goals against average. Holtby literally stole the show in game two with 37 saves on 39 shots and the save of they year in the third period. Holtby began the playoffs on the bench. He rescued the Caps season after being thrust into the pit after Washington lost the first two games of their opening round series against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Players to Watch
Alex Ovechkin lit the lamp in game two for his first goal in the Final. “The Great Eight” is on the quest for his first Stanley Cup and has had a strong post season with 13 goals, 11 assists and a plus five. Beyond that he has shown tremendous character as team captain with a full out 200-foot complete effort.
For Vegas center Jonathan Marchessault has been key with a team high eight goals to go with 11 assists and a plus eight. Left wing sniper James Neal has been clutch all year since scoring the winning goal in the first game in Golden Knights history. Neal has five goals and five assists with a plus three in the playoffs.
Vegas has posted six wins in eight road playoff games this year with just one of those games going over the total.
Washington has split their eight home playoff games this year with just three of those eight games going under the total.
Golden Knights vs. Capitals Free Picks
Momentum has clearly swung to the Washington Capitals. And as the old saying goes, “You aren’t in playoff trouble until you lose a game at home.” Washington now has the home ice advantage. And a long suffering fan base that has been through so much in playoff failure through the years will be primed. Look for Washington to have its own home ice advantage in game three!
