It is not a huge surprise that Oscar Nominated is listed as the favorite in this race. He is unbeaten at Kentucky Downs and he is looking to win this race for the second straight year. The horse rallied from seventh to win this year a year ago. Oscar Nominated also won the Exacta Systems Dueling Grounds Derby at the track in 2015. Oscar Nominated has lost his last three starts including a sixth place finish in the United Nations Stakes at Monmouth Park in late June. You almost have to throw out current form with Oscar Nominated on this track because last year he broke an eight-race losing streak by winning this race and two years ago he broke a four-race losing streak by winning on this track. Oscar Nominated has not raced since late June but is coming off two excellent workouts including a five furlong at Churchill Downs in 1:00 4/5, fastest of 14 horse at that distance.

Trainer Mike Maker has four other horses in the race, as he has 2017 United Nations winner Bigger Picture, stakes winner Bronson and allowance winner Soglio. He also has Markitoff, on the also-eligible list.

If there is a horse who might surprise in this race it could be Big Bend who has a previous stakes win at Kentucky Downs. The horse won three straight last year including the Dueling Grounds Derby at Kentucky Downs. He has not been in the best of form of late, but like Oscar Nominated, the horse really likes Kentucky Downs.

Another longshot to consider is Arklow who is coming off a win in the Kentucky Downs Preview Calumet Farm Turf Cup Stakes last month at Ellis Park. The horse won the 2017 American Turf Stakes.

Can Oscar Nominated do it again at Kentucky Downs? The horse isn’t in the best of form, but there is no denying he loves this track and it helps that he has had some good workouts leading up to this race. I am not thrilled at odds of 7-2, as I was hoping for better, but Oscar Nominated is definitely capable of winning this race. I do like Multiplier at odds of 5-1 and I also can’t ignore Big Bend on the outside. Those three horses would be the ones I would use in exotic tickets for this race.

The Calumet Farm Kentucky Turf Cup takes place on Saturday, September 8 at Kentucky Downs with a start time of 6:59 p.m. Eastern.
