Odds to win 2019 Kentucky Derby

The first Saturday in May is the best day for horse racing fans, and the Run for the Roses is taking shape as we near the May 4 running of the Kentucky Derby. Following a win at the Santa Anita Derby, Roadster vaulted to the top of the odds board at +500, and it’s a nice place to be since the last five winners at Churchill Downs were all betting favorites. One thing we can be sure of is that legendary trainer Bob Baffert will have a say in this year’s winner of the first leg of the Triple Crown. A Baffert-trained horse, or several of them, will be among the favorites when the bell rings. Roadster, along with Game Winner +600 and Improbable +800 are all trained by Baffert, who worked with triple-crown winner Justify last year.

Unlike last year when Justify was the favorite to win the Kentucky Derby and Triple Crown, which he did by the way, there is no three-year old that stands out among the field this year. Several colts had impressive runs in prep races leading up to the Derby and Omaha Beach made a big climb up the odds board to second favorite at +550 after winning the Arkansas Derby last weekend to punch his ticket to Churchill Downs.

Roadster had an impressive climb to the top of the odds list in a short time, capped by a win at the Santa Anita Derby by a half-length over stablemate and race favorite Game Winner. Roadster needed a first or second place finish to earn enough points to qualify for the Kentucky Derby. Several others have looked good in prep races. Tacitus improved his odds by winning the Wood Memorial, finishing ahead of both Tax and Haikal, who are also on the odds board with each at +2500. Tacitus leapfrogged a number of horses on the list to +1200 after winning his fourth straight race.

Tacitus, who is sired by the legendary Tapit, will look to reverse a recent trend that hasn’t seen a Wood Memorial winner take first at the Kentucky Derby since 2000. Favorites have done well at Churchill Downs the last few years, but considering the field is fairly wide open dipping down the odds list for a hefty payout is always enticing. But which horse? That’s a great question and I have a response. At +3300 Long Range Toddy could be the horse.

A win at the Rebel Stakes was an accomplishment, and the colt has placed among the top three in five of his six career races with two additional victories. A sixth-place showing at the Arkansas Derby cooled oddsmakers a bit, but Long Range Toddy had already amassed enough qualifying points to ride in the Kentucky Derby.

Baffert has increased odds of winning another Kentucky Derby with three of the top four favorites in his stable. Roadster’s Santa Anita win over Game Winner moved him to the top slot. Improbable was edged by Omaha Beach at the Arkansas Derby to fall to the fourth favorite. Omaha Beach might be the class of the field after winning a second straight race following his victory in the Rebel Stakes. And he could be the one horse that prevents Baffert from another win at Churchill Downs.
