Bellator 170 features Tito Ortiz taking on Chael Sonnen on Saturday, January 21 at The Forum in Inglewood, California. It is not that often when Bellator gets the MMA spotlight but that will be the case this weekend as the UFC has no events scheduled. It definitely helps that the main event at Bellator 170, which can be seen on Spike TV, features two well known fighters in Ortiz and Sonnen. There are five fights on the main card and twelve on the preliminary card. Let’s look at the event with a focus on the main event between Ortiz and Sonnen and Bellator picks.

Bellator 170 Main Card (Spike TV)
Chael Sonnen -156 vs. Tito Ortiz (rounds 2.5 over -170)
The main event has Sonnen coming in with a record of 28-14-1 but he has not fought in more than three years. He was last seen at UFC 167 when he lost to Rashad Evans. Sonnen was suspended for two years in 2014 after testing positive for multiple banned substances. Many people thought he would return to the UFC but he signed with Bellator instead.
Sonnen is basically waiting around to get a fight against Wanderlei Silva. “I didn’t come to this organization to fight Tito Ortiz.” Sonnen said, “I’ve been chasing Wanderlei Silva around, but Wanderlei is busy until the summer. They called me and asked if I’d fight Tito on January 21 and I didn’t have anything else going on, so I said yes.”
Ortiz is 18-12-1 in his career. He is coming off a loss to Liam McGeary but that fight was in September of 2015. Ortiz has had a lot of injury issues and he has said this will be his last fight. “This retirement is well due,” Ortiz said, “Twenty years of competition has pretty much, I’d still be fighting if it wasn’t for my surgeries.” Ortiz is almost 42-years old and he may not have much left.
This matchup between Sonnen and Ortiz is definitely full of unknowns. Sonnen hasn’t been in action for more than three years and Ortiz hasn’t done anything in about a year and a half. Ortiz said he has been in training for a long time and that he is ready to go out with a win. “I’ve been training now for almost four months and this is probably one of the longest camps I’ve had and it’s time to showcase my skills.” Ortiz said, “Chael says he’s fighting because he’s jealous and that’s the wrong way to come into a fight. I’m going in to get redemption and to me Chael is my enemy.”
Which of these fights is actually ready to fight? Sonnen has done nothing but studio work in recent years while Ortiz has been hurt. I have more confidence in Ortiz being ready for this fight than I do for Sonnen who has said he didn’t even want this fight as he is waiting around to fight Silva. I will take Ortiz at plus money to get the win. I also think that this fight probably will turn into a grab fest so I will take the rounds over the total.
