The main event at UFC Fight Night 123 on Saturday night in Fresno, California has Cub Swanson taking on Brian Ortega. Swanson is 25-7 in his career, including 10-3 in the UFC, while Ortega is 12-0, including 4-0 in the UFC. There are six fights on the main card on FS1 and seven on the preliminary card, with four on FS1 and three on UFC Fight Pass. Let’s look at the event with a focus on Swanson vs. Ortega.

Cub Swanson -125 vs. Brian Ortega
It is the veteran versus the young star in the main event, with Swanson coming in at 10-3 in the UFC, while Ortega is 4-0. It is a huge fight for both men, as Swanson wants to prove he is still a top title contender, while Ortega wants to continue to move up the rankings and get a future title shot. Swanson said to MMAjunkie that he likes the pressure of facing a new young star. “It actually feels good,” Swanson said. “It feels like less pressure. Some people may take more pressure being the favorite, but man, I feel like I’ve worked so hard to be here, and I don’t see somebody coming and taking it from me.”
Swanson said that the style matchup against Ortega is a great one for him. “I know he likes to bang, but I’m sure he’ll try to use his jiu-jitsu, as well. I just see that he’s stylistically a great matchup for me. Every fight, I’m chasing the perfect performance and feel like I’m getting closer and closer, and that’s what makes me keep fighting. I feel like this could be it. This could be your perfect performance.”
Swanson said to FloCombat that his experience will give him the edge against Ortega. “I know he’s headlined some smaller shows and this will definitely be a different stage, but I can’t prepare as if that will affect him. I’ve put all the focus on myself and making sure I go out and give the performance I know I can and I’m confident I will. I’ve been in many big fights, and I’m used to the bright lights so that won’t bother me in the slightest. I’ve prepared for him at his best, but there’s a chance all of that does factor in a bit. And if so, that’s just that much more in my favor.”
Ortega is definitely on the way up but he has yet to face a fighter as good as Swanson. Ortega’s wins in the UFC are against Thiago Tavares, Diego Brandao, Clay Guida and Renato Moicano.
I don’t know that Ortega is ready to beat a very good fighter in Swanson who is always well prepared. I will lay the small price and take Swanson to win this bout.
More UFC Picks
A couple more picks on the main card that I like are Knight over Benitez and Moraes against Sterling. On the preliminary card I like Sanders to defeat
