A pivotal light heavyweight matchup headlines this Saturday’s Fight Night in New Mexico. Both Corey Anderson and Jan Blachowicz are in the 205-pound title hunt, but beyond earning victories, they’ve taken opposite approaches in stating their case for a shot at the strap.

Anderson went berserk after scoring a knockout win over Johnny Walker in his last outing. Immediately after the stoppage, he screamed at Dana White for a title shot, then went on record saying that he’d only consider a championship bout for his next opportunity. Dana White’s reaction? Annoyance and a lot of slow your roll and wait your turn. Anderson has since calmed down, but he’s creeping closer to the end game with four straight wins.

Blachowicz has been unassuming as it gets, quietly piling up victories to become an unlikely contender. The Pole enters the main event a winner of two straight, defeating prestigious former middleweights in Luke Rockhold and Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza - distancing himself from a February 2019 loss to Thiago Santos. It’ll be tough to conjure a title fight for the Pole, who isn’t much of a personality and doesn’t have an exciting style - but a win over Anderson would be a huge statement.

While Anderson emerged as the winner of a weak TUF season, it’s taken him a few years to really hit his stride. His powerful wrestling game was enough to get him past the wannabe fighters in the house but was by no means good enough to separate himself from the midtier at a thin 205-pound class.

Heavy hitters like OSP and Gian Villante were able to score late knockouts against him in bouts he was winning, putting his chin into question. But his recent winning streak suggests that he’s finally turned a corner, putting together an efficient offense based on takedowns and high-output striking. Winning an all-out brawl with Walker was a major confidence booster as well.

Blachowicz is a former grappling specialist who has developed a highly technical kickboxing arsenal. While he’s found the rhythm to rack up wins, his conservative style hasn’t been winning over many fans. Still, he’s become one of the more difficult fighters to beat at 205 - excellent technique and solid athleticism can get you pretty far in the division. While he’s not a great wrestler, Blachowicz is very dangerous in the grappling exchanges.

UFC Odds Pick: Blachowicz to win at +179

We lean on Blachowicz for a number of reasons. While the fight should be competitive, the Pole has the defensive grappling to prevent ending up on his back too often, and he is clearly the better kickboxer with wins over boxers like Manuwa to kickers like Rockhold and knockout. Anderson doesn’t have the kill shot power to bail himself out against a better striker. After a close first round, Blachowicz should take control of the matchup with Anderson struggling to land takedowns.
