UFC on FOX 26 on Saturday night in Winnipeg features Robbie Lawler taking on Rafael dos Anjos in a welterweight title eliminator bout. The winner of this fight is expected to get a title shot against champion Tyron Woodley next year. Lawler is 28-11 in his career, while dos Anjos is 27-9. There are four fights on the main card on FOX and eight preliminary bouts, with six on FS1 and two on UFC Fight Pass. Let’s look at this event with a focus on Lawler vs. dos Anjos.
Bet on UFC at BetCris
Robbie Lawler (28-11, 13-5 UFC)
Lawler has been very good in his UFC career with 13 wins. He has won six of his last seven bouts including a win over Donald Cerrone in July. Lawler has a lot of power, winning over 70% of his fights by knockout. He badly wants another shot against Woodley who knocked him out at UFC 201 last year. Lawler is all about striking, with five of his last ten wins coming by knockout. He doesn’t have the greatest ground skills, as he has been submitted five times in his career. The good news for Lawler is that he does have excellent takedown defense, and he has been taken down just once in his last three bouts. Lawler is ranked as the No. 2 contender in the latest UFC welterweight rankings.
Dos Anjos has won seven of his last nine fights, including a win over Neil Magny in September. Unlike Lawler, dos Anjos doesn’t win with power, as he has only five knockout wins in his career. Dos Anjos does like to throw a lot of shots, but he doesn’t have a ton of power behind his strikes. Dos Anjos is very tough and he looks to wear out his opponents. He has had 19 of his fights go to a decision and he has won 13 of those fights. Dos Anjos is ranked as the No. 4 contender in the latest UFC welterweight rankings.
Lawler will look to keep this fight standing, while dos Anjos would like to get it to the mat. I don’t know that dos Anjos can get this fight to the ground, as Lawler has shown excellent takedown defense recently. If this fight ends up as a striking battle then Lawler is likely to win. Lawler is bigger and he has a four-inch reach advantage. He should be able to find consistent openings and hurt dos Anjos. I will take Lawler to get the win in this bout.
The UFC on FOX 26 card has undergone a lot of changes since it was first announced. Jose Emmett replaced Jose Aldo on this card and goes against Ricardo Lamas. Pietro Menga will step in and replace the injured Justin Scoggins and go against Tim Elliott. Darren Stewart will step in and face Julian Marquez. Nordine Taleb will go against Danny Roberts, as both of their original opponents, Sultan Aliev and Sheldon Westcott pulled out.
