BETCRIS UFC Ronaldo Souza vs Derek Brunson

Derek Brunson will be looking for revenge on Saturday night at UFC on FOX 27, as he takes on Ronaldo Souza. These two met in 2012 and it was Souza knocking out Brunson in the first round when the two were with Strikeforce. There are four fights on the main FOX card and eight fights on the preliminary card, with six on FS1 and two on UFC Fight Pass. Let’s look at the card with a focus on Souza vs. Brunson and Dennis Bermudez vs. Andre Fili.

Ronaldo Souza -156 vs. Derek Brunson

Souza, nicknamed “Jacare”, comes into this bout with a record of 24-5-1. He last fought in April of 2017 and was knocked out by Robert Whittaker. That defeat was one of just two suffered by Souza in the UFC. Only one of the last six Souza fights has gone to a decision. Jacare fought Brunson in 2012 with Strikeforce and it was Jacare knocking out Brunson in the first round.

Brunson is 18-5 in his career and coming off a knockout of Lyoto Machida last October. Brunson said that he is a much different fighter now than when he first fought Souza. “When I fought him before, I was fresh out of college, right when I first started fighting. So I came in as a straight wrestler and it takes a long time to develop your boxing skills, your muay thai skills, to not over-extend yourself when you punch, but actually being able to throw a punch and not leave yourself in danger is a key point,” said Brunson to Culture. “I’m a different fighter in that aspect. I’ve been able to knock guys out clean here recently because I’ve been able to find that mix, to find that happy medium.”

Brunson said that he envisions a title shot after he beats Souza. Brunson is ranked No. 8 in the latest UFC rankings in the middleweight division. If he wins this fight he might get a look at the winner of Robert Whittaker vs. Luke Rockhold, as they are set to battle at UFC 221 next month.

UFC Picks

I don’t think you can take much from the fight between these two in 2012. Both men are better strikers than they were back then and Brunson is definitely improved on the mat. That being said, Brunson doesn’t want this fight to go to the ground because Souza is a submission expert. I lean toward Brunson in a fight that I don’t think will go the distance.

Dennis Bermudez -160 vs. Andre Fili

Bermudez has lost four of his last six fights, so it is a little surprising to see him listed as the favorite against Fili who has won two of his last three fights. The problem with taking Fili is that he has alternated wins and losses in his last eight fights. He has not won two straight fights since 2013. Bermudez should have the edge on the mat in this fight and I think that is where it will be decided, so I will take Bermudez to get the win.

UFC on FOX 27 takes place on Saturday, January 27, 2018 at Spectrum Center in Charlotte, North Carolina, with a middleweight rematch between Ronaldo Souza and Derek Brunson as the event headliner.
