Indy 500 Odds and Picks

This year’s Indianapolis 500 has already been pretty memorable. McLaren’s failure to qualify for the race despite having one of the best drivers in the world in Fernando Alonso has provided plenty of headlines. Alonso has already won two of three legs of motorsports’ Triple Crown, and he just needs to win the Indy 500 to complete the feat. McLaren was hoping to make a splash in its return to IndyCar by helping Alonso kiss the bricks at the finish line, but instead, the whole department is undergoing a shake-up after the colossal failure.

Team Penske stands a great chance of winning its 18th Indianapolis 500. Although they were only founded in 1966, they have come to be a major player in the motorsports world, and they have won nearly three times as many Indy 500’s as the next closest team.

Penske teammates Will Power and Simon Pagenaud are the co-favorites for this race. Power won last year’s Indianapolis 500 from Grid 3, and he is in the Fast Nine this year too. He is slated to start on the outside of the second row, and Power has the best starting position of any previous winner. A win here would make him the first driver to win back-to-back Indy 500’s since Helio Castroneves did it in 2001 and 2002.

Pagenaud is in the pole position after finishing first during qualifying. He finished in sixth place last year, but he is running hot after winning the IndyCar Grand Prix at this venue two weeks ago.

The next set of favorites has another Team Penske driver among the pack in Josef Newgarden. Newgarden is the current IndyCar Series points leader ahead of this event, and he finds himself in the Fast Nine this year. He finished in eighth place last year.

Ed Carpenter is a name to watch out for as well. Carpenter finished second at the 2018 Indy 500, and he has been sharp during qualifying. He will start in the middle of the second row, and Carpenter has what it takes to upset Team Penske’s dream after leading more laps than any other racer last season.

My pick to win the race is among the contenders at 8-1. I love Alexander Rossi in this position. Rossi won the Indy 500 as a rookie in 2016, and he has finished strong in each of the last two events as well. He came in seventh in 2017 and fourth in 2018, and he has led at least one lap in each of the last three competitions. Rossi will start on the outside of the third row.

One more name to watch is Helio Castroneves. Castroneves is the only driver in the field with multiple wins at the Indianapolis 500, and a win for him here would tie him with Rick Mears, Al Unser Sr., and A.J. Foyt as the only drivers to win this race four times. He is also a member of Team Penske and out to improve after a crash last year.

Before making any bets, make sure to watch the weather report. Right now, there is a 50 percent chance of rain on Sunday, and that usually opens things up for the longshots.
