To no one’s surprise, the pattern we have seen play out all decade long in competitions between Liga MX clubs and their MLS counterparts played out in the Leagues Cup too. As we have seen in the CONCACAF Champions League, the Liga MX sides dominated the inaugural Leagues Cup, winning four of the five matches played between Mexican and US teams, so the Leagues Cup Final will feature two Liga MX teams squaring off for some silverware. Cruz Azul will face Tigres UANL in Sin City on Wednesday night.

Tigres UANL missed out on a chance to win a trophy two months ago, falling in penalties to Club America in the Campeon de Campeones. UANL had the lion’s share of possession in the match, but they couldn’t put a shot on net, leading to the clubs failing to score a goal in regulation.
This club started the Liga MX season strong with wins in three of their first four matches, but the bad kind of consistency has taken over in the last month. UANL have played their last four opponents to 1-1 draws. That has led to the club slowly sliding down the Apertura table this season.
To get to the Leagues Cup Finals, Tigres UANL knocked off Real Salt Lake 1-0 in Utah in late July, and they got revenge on America with a win in penalties after rallying to tie five minutes into stoppage time.
Cruz Azul hammered Necaxa 4-0 in the Supercopa MX at the start of the season, earning some nice hardware. However, their Liga MX campaign has not been a success. The Cement Makers have just two wins in nine matches, and they are currently in 13th place in the table.
The club has been sharp in the Leagues Cup though, cruising to wins over both MLS sides it faced. Cruz Azul breezed past the Chicago Fire 2-0 in late July, and they knocked off the Los Angeles Galaxy 2-1 last month.
Julian Quiñones is out for this match due to a knee injury, and Francisco Meza is considered doubtful due to an injury for Tigres UANL.
Cruz Azul are without Elias Hernandez until at least March because of a major knee injury, and Jose Madueña recently went down with an injury that will keep him out for this match. Guillermo Fernandez is questionable to play, but every other player appears to be available for selection although there are still a few concerns regarding Milton Caraglio.
Tigres UANL Player to Watch
Andre-Pierre Gignac continues to be the superstar up top for this club. Gignac has scored four of UANL’s 12 goals this season, and he is now the club’s all-time leading scorer. He surpassed Tomas Boy back in August, earning a spot in club history after just five years with the team. The French forward aims to be a major factor once more.
Cruz Azul Player to Watch
Yoshimar Yotun made a name for himself in Peru’s World Cup trip last year, and he has been one of the catalysts for Cruz Azul during this disappointing campaign. He has one goal and two assists thus far this season.
Because of recent form and Gignac, I’m going to give the edge to Tigres here.
Leagues Cup Finals Prediction: Tigres UANL 2, Cruz Azul 0
