The matchup between the United States and Mexico will go down Saturday, October 10, 2015 at 9:30 p.m. ET at the Rose Bowl. The duel will be televised live on FOX Sports 1.

Over the summer, the United States ended up failing miserably in the Gold Cup, getting bounced out in the semifinals against Jamaica. The loss in and of itself was incredibly painful, knowing that it was a great chance for the Americans to continue the momentum they had built up during a great World Cup run two years ago. However, the biggest harm in that loss was the fact that an automatic spot in the Confederations Cup in 2017 was lost.

Not all is lost for the Americans, though. Due to the fact that they won the 2013 Gold Cup, they have a chance to compete against the 2015 winners, Mexico, for the right to claim North America's one and only spot in the 2017 Confederations Cup in Russia, the prequel to the World Cup.

Though most won't understand the magnitude of this match, the fact that the United States and Mexico could both get some much-needed experience on the pitches on Russian soil before taking off for the World Cup is incredibly value. The exposure for both programs would be great, and there will be a legitimate chance to claim some more silverware as well for either side.

Of course, there is a lot of pressure on both managers as well.

Mexico still has an interim manager after Miguel Herrera was dismissed following the Gold Cup for an off-the-pitch issue involving a reporter. Ricardo Ferretti has had all sorts of success at U.A.N.L. Tigres, one of the top clubs in the Mexican domestic league, but whether he can lead the Mexicans in this pivotal match remains to be seen.

Thus far, El Tri hasn't been in great form. The team has drawn against both Argentina and Trinidad and Tobago in the matches leading up to the Confederations Cup playoff. A win though, would forgive all past sins, and it would likely give Ferretti a legitimate chance to earning this job on a permanent basis.

Meanwhile, the pressure has been ratcheted up on Jurgen Klinsmann. Though the World Cup run was special, many hoped for more than a spot in the last 16. Failure at the Gold Cup was considered a disaster, and not qualifying for the Confederations Cup might actually be the straw that broke the camel's back for the German, especially if this match isn't all that close.

Veteran sides will be on display for both teams. The Americans are going to call upon Brad Guzan in net in place of Tim Howard in spite of the fact that he struggled at the tail end of the Gold Cup, and many of the others in this lineup will be vets who have been here before. That's a far cry from what we have seen out of the Stars and Stripes in recent years, as Klinsmann has put together a lot of younger players to bring with him to all of these competitions, including the World Cup.

CONCACAF is an improving region, and earning the right to be called the top team in North America heading into the 2017 Confederations Cup and the 2018 World Cup is absolutely a big deal. That's why tens of millions of people will be dialed in to what will be going on over at the Rose Bowl on Saturday night in the match which will help determine the immediate futures of the United States and Mexico.
