The United States will kick off their campaign to defend their Gold Cup this Tuesday. The USMNT are the reigning Gold Cup champions after knocking off Jamaica in the final in 2017, and they are looking to win their eighth Gold Cup this year. However, they have not been in good form ahead of this year’s event. The USMNT have not looked great on either side of the ball, but they are hoping a match against Guyana will be a panacea for their problems.

Guyana doesn’t have much of a soccer pedigree. Unlike the vast majority of their contemporaries on the South American continent, they identify more with Caribbean countries and don’t have a lot of soccer seasoning. They have never made the World Cup, and this is their first appearance at the Gold Cup. They are ranked 177th in the world per the most recent FIFA rankings, and there was a two-year stretch where they didn’t play a match earlier this decade.
The Golden Jaguars are 2-1-3 over the last 12 months. Guyana tore apart the Turks and Caicos Islands by a margin of 8-0 and knocked off Belize 2-1 in CONCACAF Nations League qualifying for their wins. They drew Barbados as well, but the losses don’t inspire a lot of confidence. Guyana lost to French Guiana in November, and the Golden Jaguars followed that up with a 1-0 loss to Bermuda and a 3-1 loss to Haiti last week.
Gregg Berhalter took over as the new manager of the USMNT at the start of the year. The initial returns were fantastic as the Stars and Stripes beat Panama, Costa Rica, and Ecuador by a combined margin of 6 to 0, but their last three games have not gone according to script.
The USMNT can’t be begrudged too much for a 1-1 draw against Chile, but there last two performances leave a lot to be desired. They were shutout and ended up losing to Jamaica 1-0 last week, and their performance against Venezuela was even worse. The US gave up three goals to Venezuela in 36 minutes and were a horrorshow in the back.
United States Player to Watch
Matt Miazga was counted upon to be the anchor of the back line, but he was not good against Venezuela. He was out of position at crucial moments, and that allowed Venezuela to carve up their defense. This back line doesn’t have a lot of experience, and Miazga is the most talented player in defense. The Chelsea center back has to play better.
Guyana Player to Watch
Emery Welshman is a familiar face to US soccer fans. He played for Siena and Oregon State and netted 32 goals in 70 matches as a collegiate player. Since turning professional he has bounced around the first- and second-tier leagues here in the US and Canada. Welshman has played for four different MLS teams, and he is currently on Forge FC in the Canadian Premier League. He has seven goals in nine appearances with the national team.

The USMNT are too big of favorites here. Their recent performance has left a lot to be desired, and it’s hard to see them covering such a big spread. Those offensive woes are unlikely to be solved soon, so take the underdog.
United States vs. Guyana Prediction: United States 2, Guyana 0
