If Trinidad and Tobago are to advance to the knockout rounds of the Gold Cup, they will need to knock off the United States on Saturday. Fortunately for the Soca Warriors, they have a victory over the Stars and Stripes in recent memory. Trinidad and Tobago knocked off the USMNT in the last World Cup qualifying match in 2017, keeping the Americans out of the World Cup. The USMNT has certainly not forgotten that defeat, and they will be out to make amends on Saturday.

The USMNT did not look sharp in their final two matches before the Gold Cup, failing to net a goal in losses to Jamaica and Venezuela. However, they were able to secure a 4-0 victory against Guyana in the debut match of this competition.
Despite the final score, this wasn’t a dominant victory for the Americans. It took them a while to break open the back line of a team ranked 177th in the world, and they went into half up just 1-0. The Stars and Stripes performed better in the second half with Tyler Boyd netting two nice goals and Gyasi Zardes scoring a fluky goal after a ball smashed off his face and into the net, but they were flustered until Guyana’s back line wore down.
Trinidad and Tobago played a very defensive game against Panama in their opener. The Soca Warriors had nearly half the possession, but they failed to register a shot on net. They weren’t able to really build up an attack and that led to a relatively listless first half.
Unfortunately, their strategy fell to pieces in the second half. Panama were able to net two goals, and they did little to stop their opponents. Trinidad and Tobago will need to open things up more if they are to get a win.
United States Player to Watch
Paul Arriola had a very good game for the USMNT. He opened up the scoring with a blistering shot after a lovely pass from Weston McKennie put him in a dangerous position. He didn’t stop there either, as he was constantly a threat throughout the evening. Arriola isn’t one of the big names on this team, but he was doing something the Stars and Stripes had failed to do in recent matches. His ability to open up defenses with his runs helped out his teammates and contributed to the remaining goals.
Trinidad and Tobago Player to Watch
Kevin Molino is in his ninth season of playing American soccer, and he is the best player on this team. Molino’s 19 goals are more than twice as many as anyone else on the roster. The Minnesota United midfielder is healthy again after tearing his ACL in the second game of the 2018 campaign, and he will be the focal point of the attack.
United States vs. Trinidad and Tobago Free Picks
I just don’t believe in this US team. They aren’t too impressive on the offensive end, and I believe that Trinidad and Tobago will do a much better job of containing them. This will be a much closer match than the oddsmakers believe, and I’ll grab the Soca Warriors and the goals. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them grab a result either.
United States vs. Trinidad and Tobago Prediction: United States 2, Trinidad and Tobago 1
