United States vs Jamaica 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup Betting Odds

A rematch of the 2017 Gold Cup Final will determine one of the finals participants this year. The United States and Jamaica met to decide the winner of the Gold Cup two years ago, in what turned out to be a very evenly matched game. The USMNT and the Reggae Boyz were tied most of the way, but a Jordan Morris goal in the 88th minute gave the United States a 2-1 lead that would take them over the line. It was the sixth Gold Cup victory for the United States, and they are hoping to defend their title this year.

Recent Form

Jamaica surprised many by playing a high scoring game in its first Gold Cup match. The Reggae Boyz are known more for their defensive prowess, but perhaps they wanted to entertain the hometown fans that came out to support them in Kingston for their opener against Honduras. Dever Orgill notched a first half brace, and Damion Lowe added another in a 3-2 win for Jamaica.

Since that point, Jamaica have gone back to the defensive style that has defined them. They played a scoreless draw with El Salvador and finished off the Group Stage with a 1-1 tie with Curacao after their opponents scored in the third minute of extra time. Jamaica were drawn against Panama in the Quarterfinals, and the game’s lone goal was a Darren Mattocks penalty in the 75th minute that was enough for a win.

The United States flattened their first two opponents in the Group Stage. The Stars and Stripes ran roughshod over both Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago, combining to outscore both teams by a margin of 10-0.

Those victories over lesser foes masked the USMNT’s offensive deficiencies we saw ahead of the Gold Cup though, and those issues have come to roost in their last two matches. The US needed a Jozy Altidore goal in the 66th minute to best Panama 1-0 in order to win their group, and they were not impressive in a 1-0 win over tiny Curacao on Sunday.

United States Player to Watch

Michael Bradley is the most capped player on the roster and has been the stopper for the USMNT for the last decade. However, his performance at this Gold Cup has not been an inspiring one. Bradley is in his 30s, and he struggles to keep up with attackers. He looked a step slow against Curacao, and that nearly cost the USMNT on a couple different occasions. Bradley is the veteran in the room on a team mostly filled with youngsters, but he has to play better or else the US are ripe to be upset.

Jamaica Player to Watch

The Reggae Boyz have been sharp in defense despite not having Wes Morgan, and the outside backs have played a major role in that regard. Kemar Lawrence has had a great season. He was selected to the MLS All-Star Game for the first time in his career yesterday, and he has done a great job at shutting down attacks from the flanks.

United States vs. Jamaica Free Picks

I am tempted to take Jamaica here, but I just don’t think they have the weapons on offense. They don’t have a proven scorer that can finish, while the Americans have the advantage in the midfield and up front.

United States vs. Jamaica Prediction: United States 2, Jamaica 1
