Manchester City entered the International Champions Cup as the current champion of the famed English Premier League after winning that title in absolutely dominant fashion. This made Man City among the top tier favorites at the opening of ICC play.
But in their ICC opener against Borussia Dortmund the EPL champs stumbled to a 1-0 defeat. With that result both Manchester City and handicappers were put on notice that nobody is safe in this event that is loaded with championship caliber clubs. Now Man City must quickly shake off the bad day as they will face a strong and familiar EPL rival in Liverpool.

Met Life Stadium was opened in 2010 and has a seating capacity of 82,500. It is best known as home of the NFL New York Giants and New York Jets. However International soccer is no stranger to Met Life Stadium and in fact the seating was constructed to conform to FIFA sanctioned rules. As a result, Met Life Stadium offers some of the best sight lines for the sport that can be found anywhere in the world. This foresight has also allowed for several major international matches to be played there. The last two International Champions Cup matches at MetLife Stadium drew sellout crowds.
A Resurgent Magnificent City
Manchester City has won three English Premier League championships in the past seven seasons. Since being purchased by the Abu Dhabi Group in 2008 the results have been staggering for a franchise that was floundering prior to that. In fact, Manchester City dropped all the way down to the third tier of English football in 1998. But now Man City is firmly established as a top tier powerhouse that is a regular in the knockout stages of the Champions League.
Old Money Liverpool
In contrast to the recent success of Manchester City, Liverpool is considered “old money” when it comes to the English Premier League. In fact, they have the second most championships in EPL history at 18 behind only Manchester United’s 20 titles. In addition, Liverpool has a total of five Champions League crowns. Although they have not won the Premier League since it was rebranded in 1992 they are usually in the thick of the hunt.
Ball Hogging City
Fortunately for fans, both Manchester City and Liverpool play styles of football that make for enjoyable viewing. Man City is famed for its ball possession tactics that border on outright ball hogging. This past EPL season they had a possession rate of 66 percent. However, in the ICC opener Borussia Dortmund checked them down to a much lower 54 percent which was certainly a factor in the upset defeat.
Liverpool Takes the Attack
Jurgen Klopp has made Liverpool among the most exciting teams to watch anywhere in the world. Klopp employs a counter press that generates a high-octane level of football. Although the system originates out of team defense the idea is to quickly transition out of defending and into quick counter attacks.
Mohamed Salah gives Liverpool a deadly strike capability. Salah became the first Liverpool player to score more than 40 goals in a season since Ian Rush did so all the way back in 1986-87. Matching up against Salah will be Man City midfielding ace Kevin De Bruyne.
