For 80 years, the Madrid Derby has pitted the two premier clubs in the Spanish capital against one another. The derby takes places at least twice a year as both teams have been in La Liga for each of the last eight decades; barring a two-year spurt where Atletico Madrid was down in Segunda Division. Real Madrid and Atletico won’t face off in the capital for their ICC match on Friday though, instead taking their rivalry to East Rutherford where they will square off just outside the Big Apple.

Atletico Madrid took on a bottom-tier Segunda Division side when they faced Numancia on Saturday. Atletico needed some time to get going though, and they didn’t score until the 69th minute when Vitolo finally found the back of the net. Following that goal, Ivan Saponjic and Felipe broke through too to give Atletico a 3-0 win. Not long after the final whistle, Atletico boarded a plane and flew across the Atlantic Ocean to take part in the ICC. They will face Liga MX side Chivas Guadalajara in Texas on Tuesday night.
As for Real Madrid, the winningest club in Champions League history is coming off a tough 3-1 loss to Bayern Munich on Saturday night in Houston. Bayern scored the game’s first three goals before Real’s Rodrygo broke through late to get the Spanish giants on the board. They will face Arsenal in Washington DC on Tuesday night before this match.
Soccer Match Prediction
There are no soccer betting odds for this match just yet, but Atletico Madrid are likely to be underdogs. This is a good spot to bet the underdog as both Felix and Llorente have a bit to prove.
New Faces – Atletico Madrid
Joao Felix was the prize of the offseason for Atletico, and their fans are eager to see him in action. Felix only played 27 minutes against Numancia before coming off due to injury. The move to take him off the pitch was largely preventive, and he is expected to take part in the preseason.
Marcos Llorente came over from Real Madrid, and defensive tactician Diego Simeone will have some new defenders to work with in the back line. Center backs Mario Hermoso and Felipe and outside backs Kieran Trippier and Renan Lodi all were signed for between $20-$30 million.
Key Departures – Atletico Madrid
Of course, Atletico suffered a number of losses this offseason too. Antoine Griezmann left the club to move to Barcelona, depriving them of their top goal scoring option. Lucas Hernandez went to Bayern Munich and Rodri shipped out to Manchester City, so Atletico need their new signings to pay dividends.
New Faces – Real Madrid
At long last, Eden Hazard is part of Real Madrid. The talented Belgian was widely expected to come to the Bernabeu in 2018, but a potential move fell apart. He is expected to shine alongside Luka Modric in a revamped midfield.
Luka Jovic was added to give Real another scorer up top, while Rodrygo is a winger that can create havoc. Ferland Mendy and Eder were inked as well to give Real Madrid some young bodies in the back line.
Key Departures – Real Madrid
Midfielder Mateo Kovacic, left back Theo Hernandez, forward Raul Tomas, and Llorente were the big names that left Real this summer. That’s unlikely to be the last of the departures too, as Gareth Bale is rumored to be on his way out. Zinedine Zidane has backed off his previous stance that Bale’s departure is imminent, but a transfer is likely to happen soon.
