Campeones Cup Final Preview Atlanta United vs Club America

Last year, the Campeones Cup saw its debut. This new trophy between the MLS and Liga MX was christened as part of an effort to strengthen regional ties and increase the quality of competition in North America as a whole. The MLS Cup winner squares off against the Campeon de Campoenes from Liga MX, and this year’s edition will see Atlanta United host Club America. Atlanta are out to avenge MLS colleague Toronto after the Canadian club fell to UANL Tigres 3-1 in 2018.

Recent Form

As winners of the 2018 MLS Cup, Atlanta United were rewarded with an automatic spot in this soccer game. They were seen as the top team for much of the season due to their exciting brand of soccer under Tata Martino, and they fulfilled their promise with a 2-0 win over the Portland Timbers in December.

After some initial missteps under a new manager, the club has emerged as one of the contenders this season too. Atlanta United are fabulous at home with the Five Stripes winning nine of their last 10 in Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Club America qualified for the Campeones Cup after beating Clausura winner Tigres UANL last month in the Campeon de Campeones. America had the better chances in regulation, but neither side could score, sending the match to penalties tied at zero. There, America won 6-5 after the first five up for each squad failed to settle the matter.

This club is off to a 2-1-0 start in the Liga MX Apertura. Club America crushed Monterrey in their season opener a few weeks ago with Nicolas Castillo tallying two goals, and they followed that up by playing Leon to a 0-0 draw away from home. Last week, they defeated Tijuana 3-1, but the victory came at a big price.

Key Absences

Castillo has been one of Club America’s best attackers since he was acquired from Benfica in February, but he is out for the rest of the calendar year. He collided with Tijuana’s goalkeeper in the last match, and tests revealed that he suffered a broken fibula. His loss is massive, and America will also be without goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa due to an adductor injury.

Frank de Boer is hopeful that Josef Martinez will be healthy in time for this match. Martinez missed the match against Orlando City earlier this week with an injury, and he is doubtful for this weekend’s tilt against NYCFC. Forward Brandon Vazquez is questionable to suit up, and Kevin Kratz and Brek Shea are both out.

Atlanta United Player to Watch

If Martinez is banged up, de Boer will focus on playing solid defense. That will put the onus on goalkeeper Brad Guzan. Guzan has had an incredible career, and he is putting the finishing touches on it in Atlanta. He has been an All-Star selection for each of the last two seasons.

Club America Player to Watch

Roger Martinez has scored 11 goals since joining America last season, and he will be asked with creating even more with Castillo out. Martinez helped spur the club to the Apertura title last year, and he is hoping to lead them to another trophy.

Campeones Cup Final Free Picks

MLS teams do not have good fortune against Liga MX teams. Liga MX clubs have won all 11 CONCACAF Champions League titles, and eight of those finals have been all-Mexican affairs. Everything is going against America heading into this match though, so if it’s ever going to be broken, it will be now.

Campeones Cup Final Prediction: Atlanta United 2, Club America 1
