England vs USA

Unsurprisingly, England have dominated their head-to-head history with the United States. The Three Lions have a 7-1-2 record in their 10 meetings with the United States, and they are undefeated against the Stars and Stripes in friendlies. However, the US have picked up results against

England on international soccer’s biggest stage. In their first meeting, the US pulled off one of the greatest upsets in World Cup history by beating England 1-0 at the 1950 World Cup. In their last meeting, the US was able to secure a point against England at the 2010 World Cup, picking up a draw thanks to a howler of a goal allowed by Robert Green that has been nicknamed the ‘Hand of Clod’.

Recent Form

The US Men’s National Team has been in disarray over the last year. The Stars and Stripes failed to qualify for the World Cup for the first time in 32 years after failing to beat either Costa Rica or Trinidad and Tobago in their last two games, and that led to the sacking of Bruce Arena. Dave Sarachan has been the team’s interim manager over the past year, but he has yet to be named the team’s full-time coach and a replacement has yet to be found. The US have won just one of their last four matches despite all four being on home turf.

England have carried over their fantastic summer into their recent performances in friendlies. The Three Lions outperformed expectations at the World Cup in Russia, knocking off Colombia and Sweden in the knockout rounds to make it to the semifinals before falling to Croatia in extra time. That made Gareth Southgate one of the most popular men in England, and the national team has continued to play well. England topped Switzerland and Spain within the last two months, and they drew with Croatia.

United States Player to Watch

Christian Pulisic is the future of the USMNT… no pressure. Pulisic is a 20-year-old wunderkind that has proven himself on both the national and club levels in a relatively short amount of time. He was one of the best players on the Stars and Stripes during World Cup Qualifying, and he was able to create numerous goal scoring chances as a playmaking No. 10. This will be his first time in action for the US in quite some time though. He hasn’t played since May as Borussia Dortmund have been very careful with him.

England Player to Watch

Wayne Rooney will return to international duty for the Three Lions for the first time in over a year. Rooney seemed ready to fade away after his play took a dip in 2017, and he stepped back from both the Premier League and the international squad. However, he has appeared rejuvenated since going to Major League Soccer, and he led an inspired turnaround for DC United. He averaged nearly a point a game, and Southgate believes this would be the perfect time to give him a proper sendoff. This is a one-off appearance, and it will almost certainly be his last time in all-white.

The over is a great play in this one. This is more of a show match than usual friendlies, and both sides will be out to play an exciting game with each team moving up and down the pitch. Rooney will get to see the field plenty, and there will be fresh legs throughout due to expanded rosters and unlimited substitutions.

England vs USA Prediction: England 2, USA 2
