The UEFA Super Cup is contested annually between the previous season’s Champions League winner and the previous campaign’s Europa League winner. After last year’s all-English finals for both events, this year’s Super Cup will be an all-English affair too. Liverpool are the favorites to hoist the trophy after winning the Champions League last season, but Chelsea are out to claim another title after their Europa League win.

Liverpool have already missed an opportunity to earn silverware this season. They faced off against Manchester City for the FA Community Shield eight days ago, but they couldn’t get past the Citizens and lost in penalties. Fortunately, they had better luck in the Premier League season opener against Norwich City.
The Reds had little trouble dispatching of the Canaries. Their first goal was an ugly own goal, but Mo Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Divock Origi all scored in the first half to give Liverpool a 4-1 win in Anfield.
It’s going to be a rough year for Chelsea. The loss of Eden Hazard and the inability to add any soccer players through the transfer window will significantly weaken the Blues, and a return to the top four might be out of the question.
The Blues got a rude wake-up call in their season opener against Manchester United. Although Chelsea had some good chances and controlled the game for stretches, they ended up losing 4-0 and were the only Big Six club to lose on opening weekend. Cesar Azpilicueta and Kurt Zouma did not look sharp in the loss.
Reece James and Marco van Ginkel are both long-term injuries for the reigning Europa League champions, and others are out for at least a few more weeks. Antonio Rudiger is still recovering from meniscus surgery, Callum Hudson-Odoi is nearly healthy after rupturing his Achilles tendon, and Ruben Loftus-Cheek is still rehabilitating from a calf injury. Willian is questionable because of a strained hamstring.
Not having Alisson for at least the next month is going to be a blow for Liverpool. The Brazilian goalkeeper was fantastic for the club last season, shoring up a position that had been a problem for most of the decade. He was subbed off in the first half after a non-contact injury that turned out to be a calf issue. Nathaniel Clyne tore his ACL in preseason and will likely miss most of the season.

Christian Pulisic was used as a substitute on Sunday but expect the young American sensation to be given his first start at Stamford Bridge here. Pedro and Ross Barkley were not particularly impressive, and on just two days rest, manager Frank Lampard will likely want fresh legs in his midfield. This will be a real chance for Pulisic to make a name for himself.

The loss of Alisson has ratcheted up the pressure on Adrian. Liverpool’s back up goalkeeper was only signed on a free transfer from West Ham United last Monday, and he is slated to make his first start here. Adrian is a veteran with over 150 caps, but he will have awfully big shoes to fill.
Chelsea don’t stand much of a chance against a team with so many advantages. Liverpool are playing at home on more rest, and they have more talent to boot.
