New York City FC has picked up where they left off last year and is in the thick of the Eastern Conference with first place Atlanta United FC. New York City FC Recent Form
New York City FC has been in good form lately with four wins, a loss and a draw in their last six matches. Last Saturday at Yankee Stadium a crowd of 20,802 saw a thrilling 2-2 draw in which New York City FC dominated with 73% possession time. However, they blew a 2-1 lead late when Erik Hurtado scored the equalizer at the 87-minute mark. Vancouver is in the middle of the Western Conference standings so that home draw was underwhelming from a results standpoint.
Prior to that at Seattle FC New York City FC lost 3-1 despite holding a 58% possession time. Each team had to make two saves. The loss was disappointing in that Seattle FC is a middle of the pack team in the Western Conference.
On July 26 New York City FC scored a 2-0 win at Orlando City SC despite the fact that that Orlando City forced them into five saves.
Toronto FC Recent Form
Toronto FC is coming off perhaps their top performance of the season in a 2-2 draw at Atlanta United FC in front of a big crowd of 45,191 in Atlanta’s Mercedes Benz Stadium. Atlanta United FC is the top team in the Eastern Conference which served as something as a moral victory for Toronto FC. Especially exhilarating was the fact that Toronto FC tied the match in extra time with a goal by Tosaint Ricketts. Toronto did have to hold on to their lives however as they were forced into four saves and had possession just 45% of the time.
On July 28 Toronto FC scored a 3-0 home win over the Chicago Fire and held a 60% possession rate while forcing Chicago into making four saves.
By the Numbers
New York City FC is the third highest scoring team in MLS while Toronto ranks eighth in goal scoring. New York City FC has allowed the fewest goals in the Eastern Conference and is second for goal differential. Toronto has allowed the third most goals in the Eastern Conference. Their leaky defense has been the key culprit in their drop this year.
Players to Watch
New York City FC is led by Maximiliano Moralez, David Villa, and Ismael Tajouri Shradi as they have eight goals each. Jonathan Osorio leads Toronto FC with eight goals. Villa in particular is well respected as a World Cup winner that has 71 career goals for New York City FC since joining in 2014.
