Both Los Angeles FC and Real Salt Lake are in a neck and neck race to stay in the knockout round of the MLS Western Conference. However, LA FC has stumbled recently with the Vancouver Whitecaps lurking nearby ready to take over their playoff spot if the slump continues. Real Salt Lake has also been sluggish lately although somewhat better than LA FC.

Banc of California Stadium was opened two years ago and stands on the same ground as the former Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena. With seating of 22,000 it also has press box suites and a large roof to protect fans. It has been the home of Los Angeles FC since it’s opening.
Real Salt Lake Keeps Head Above Water
So far for August, Real Salt Lake is off to a solid start. In their last match this past Saturday Real Salt Lake and the Montreal Impact played to a 1-1 draw which extended Real Salt Lake’s home unbeaten streak to 12 games. It was the third draw in the last for games for Real Salt Lake, who held a strong 58% time of possession advantage while forcing five saves by the Impact. Montreal forced three saves by Real Salt Lake.
Prior to that on August 4, Real Salt Lake scored a 2-1 home win over the Chicago Fire. Damir Kreilach scored both goals for the winning side. The Chicago Fire was rendered helpless with just 34% possession time as Real Salt Lake forced a whopping eight saves by Chicago while having to make just three saves themselves.
Overall Real Salt Lake has 10 wins, five draw and nine losses with a negative seven goal differential.
Los Angeles FC Stumbles
LA FC has not played well lately and is winless for the month of August so far after a 0-2 home loss to Sporting Kansas City on Saturday. Los Angeles FC had a slim 52% possession advantage and forced Sporting Kansas City into five saves. Conversely LAFC had to make only three saves but SKC was simply more accurate. For LA FC it was the end of a 14-match unbeaten streak at home.
On August 5 the New York Red Bulls took Los Angeles FC apart for a 2-1 win. Daniel Royer scored both goals for New York, who only had a 46% possession rate in the win. LA FC had to make three saves while forcing the Red Bulls into making two stops.
Los Angeles FC is currently posting a record of 10 wins, six draws and seven losses with a goal differential of plus six. A 5-0 loss at Minnesota last month triggered LA FC’s problems.
Forward Adama Diomande leads Los Angeles FC with nine goals in just 11 matches and also has three assists with 26 shots. Forward Carlos Vela has eight goals in 17 games with three assists for LA FC.
Forward Joao Plata leads Real Salt Lake with seven goals in 16 matches with four assists. Midfielder Damir Kreilach has six goals in 24 matches and three assists.
On March 10 LA FC posted a 5-1 win at Real Salt Lake as Diego Rossi scored two goals with LA FC forcing seven saves by Real Salt Lake.
