It’s hard to describe Liverpool’s 2019-20 campaign without gesticulating wildly and babbling about the Reds’ dominance. Liverpool have been the best team in the Premier League by a country mile, leading the league by 14 points even though they have played one less game than second-place Manchester City. They are set to finally end a three-decade long league title drought in an emphatic way, holding a 20-1-0 record in mid-January. Liverpool are on pace to smash Manchester City’s record as the best team in the history of the Premier League, and they are heavy favorites per the Premier League betting odds to grab all three points at home against Manchester United this week.

Manchester United have had an up and down season. It appeared that the Red Devils might be set to sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in late October with the club in 14th place, but they decided to keep the Norwegian manager and it has largely paid off. The Red Devils have surged since that point, posting a record of 7-3-3 over the last three months to rise to fifth in the Premier League table. United are still five points behind Chelsea for the last Champions League berth, but they are in much better shape than fellow Big Six clubs Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal.
How many titles will Liverpool win this year? The Reds claimed the UEFA Super Cup in mid-August with a shootout win over Chelsea, and they won the FIFA Club World Cup just last month. They have an easy fourth round match-up against Shrewsbury in the FA Cup and are sizable favorites to advance past Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, making it possible for Liverpool to claim an unprecedented five trophies this campaign. The one that matters the most is the Premier League title after so much recent heartache though, and the Reds are out to avenge their lone blemish of the season. United were the only team to take points from Liverpool this year, playing the Reds to a 1-1 draw in Old Trafford.
The Red Devils were already going to have a tough time earning a result in Anfield, but their challenge is even greater given their injuries. Star midfielder Paul Pogba is out until the end of January, and Scott McTominay will be sidelined at least another month. Marcos Rojo, Luke Shaw, and Axel Tuanzebe are all set to mis this match, while leading goal scorer Marcus Rashford is questionable along with Eric Bertrand Bailly and Timothy Fosu-Mensah.
Liverpool are still without Naby Keita, Nathaniel Clyne, and James Milner, but they are not in the dire straits that their opponents are in coming into this match. The Reds are unlikely to have Fabio Tavares and Dejan Lovren, and Joel Matip is questionable, but their core group is intact.
Manchester United Player to Watch
Solskjaer would be elated to see his team leave Anfield with any result, and Harry Maguire will be the linchpin in his gameplan. Maguire was United’s top signing this offseason, and it appears that 80 million pounds might have been a bargain for the center back given the struggles their city rivals are having at the position this year. He is a physical defender who is excellent in the air and at bumping forwards off the ball, and he will be tasked with trying to stop this imposing attack.
Liverpool Player to Watch
Alisson is the best goalkeeper in the world. The Brazilian is playing in rarified air at this moment with six straight clean sheets to his credit in Premier League play, and his performance has led to Jurgen Klopp playing a more defensive style to ensure three points. He has surrendered just one goal in all competitions over the past six weeks.
Until they lose, it’s impossible to go against Liverpool. Just ride the wave.
English Premier League Prediction: Liverpool 2, Manchester United 0
